LEADER JESSICA ROWBURY

Promoting photonics

While light-based technology has a profound impact on many areas of society, it often does not get the same recognition as giant industries such as software. This can affect the flow of talent into the field – if less students and graduates are aware of the photonics industry and its successes, the less likely they are to acknowledge, or seriously consider, it as a future career path.

Initiatives like the Day of Photonics, which takes place every year on 21 October, aims to promote the industry to wider audiences. To mark the occasion, we spoke to young engineers at the start of their careers to find out more about their journeys into photonics. The aim was to give insight into how we can improve awareness of photonics among young people – and more importantly, how the sector can attract and retain them. One engineer we spoke to hadn’t heard

of the industry until the word ‘photonics’ started appearing in job searches. To fix this, it was suggested that more practical lessons earlier in school could help to spark interest in students early on. The industry doing more to highlight end applications and products to students – and the impact these have on our everyday lives – was also suggested as a way of promoting photonics as a potential career path – and importantly, one with a high impact, a key desirable on the job wishlists of our interviewees.
