Even before 2020 was ushered in with the arrival of Covid-19, causing chaos for travellers and would-be delegates heading for industry events, there was a feeling of change in the air. While open access has been a
discussion point for many years, open research has become something of a cause célèbre over the last year or two, and this year has already been one where great progress has been made on the subject of open data. On page 4, Rebecca Pool speaks to several key figures about developments in this area.
The preprint has been another popular discussion area at industry events recently, and on page 10 we ask five industry experts for their opinions on preprints – past, present, and future.
The analysis and opinion section of this issue is largely based around the subject of new businesses that are springing up in scholarly communications, with submissions from writers on different sides of the industry, and we have set-piece interviews with two women who are making great strides in their respective organisations.
