ast year was the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, and the
National Gallery in London and the Louvre in Paris both held retrospectives of the life of the great artist. Part of the National Gallery’s exhibition were new imaging studies of Da Vinci’s Te Virgin of the Rocks, based on macro x-ray fluorescence scanning and hyperspectral imaging. Te studies revealed the original sketches Da Vinci made underneath the layers of paint, giving insight into his working practices. Giorgia Marucci, of Pro-Lite
Technology, visited the exhibition at the National Gallery at the end of 2019 and, on page 4, with input from the National Gallery’s scientific department, writes about how hyperspectral imaging was used in the study. On page 8, Matthew Dale explores
the latest hyperspectral cameras for factory automation, along with other uses such as art exploration and agriculture. Tis issue also has a preview of
the vision technology on display at the Embedded World trade fair in Nuremberg on page 24. Neil Trevett, of Nvidia and Te Khronos Group, will be giving a presentation at the show talking about open API standards for applications using machine learning and embedded vision. He writes about the options available on page 20. Transport (page 16) and automated
