ar manufacturers have embraced robotics and machine vision in their highly automated production lines. Now, with most big auto
makers ramping up production of electric vehicles, there are opportunities for inspection and automation procedures in these new factory lines. Te article on page 22 looks at some of the areas where imaging is being used – and might be used in the future – in automotive manufacturing, including in laser welding for making electric motors. In the UK, Jaguar Land Rover has recently announced
plans to build a range of electrified vehicles at its Castle Bromwich plant in Birmingham. UK automation is driven largely by the automotive sector, according to Mike Wilson, chairman of the British Automation and Robot Association; Wilson spoke about UK factory automation at the UKIVA machine vision conference in Milton Keynes, a report of which is on page 12. Elsewhere in this issue, Petra Tanner and Daniel
Soukup, from the Austrian Institute of Technology, discuss ways of working with neural networks when data is scarce (page 28). Matthew Dale, on page 16, explores the extremely high resolution cameras being used for flat panel display inspection, while, on page 26, Keely Portway sinks her teeth into new imaging techniques being developed for dentistry, from diagnosis to inspecting prostheses. Tere is also a look ahead to the Photonex show in
October in Coventry, UK on page 32. Until then though, enjoy the summer!
