14 6 6 4 Leader Greg Blackman Lessons from Stuttgart T
he vision industry met in November for the biennial Vision Stuttgart trade fair. Embedded processing and deep learning were two big
talking points at the show, and our reports on page 4 (deep learning) and page 6 (embedded vision) discuss the technology released in these areas. With the rise of embedded processing, what used
to be the separate worlds of consumer imaging and machine vision are now intersecting to a much greater extent. Tere are many business forces in play at the moment in the vision industry, and Mark Williamson, Stemmer Imaging’s managing director, commented during a panel discussion at the trade fair that the industrial vision sector is in a transition phase at the moment, where the route to market is evolving. As vision products get cheaper, more emphasis is put on the service a company provides to help the customer succeed. Congratulations go to Photoneo, which won the
Vision Award for its structured light 3D camera. A report on Photoneo’s winning technology can be found on page 10. Tere are also articles on hyperspectral imaging (page 14), vision in logistics (page 18), imaging in the life sciences, including in pathology (page 22), and the lens technology that was on display at Vision 2018 (page 30). Tere’s also a preview on page 26 of vision equipment at SPIE Photonics West, one of the first shows of 2019. It just leaves me to wish all our readers a prosperous New Year!
