At this year’s Charleston Conference, the keynote speaker – Clarivate Analytics’ Annette Thomas – spoke at length about the need for the academic publishing industry to place the needs of researchers and scholars at the heart of its raison d’être.


It’s a theme that we are hearing


increasingly often at conferences and meetings around the world, and is taken up by one of our contributors, Manuel Martin, on page 10. Martin states that problems are prevalent at the very core of the scientific publishing industry, with healthy profits masking internal issues in what he refers to as a ‘highly oligopolistic space’.
