LaserSharp for packaging production


TLM Laser has added LaserSharp digital converting technology to its portfolio. This


follows a recent partnership agreement with LasX Industries, a company specialising in laser converting systems and services. The laser processing systems developed by LasX are used for laser cutting, scoring, and perforating processes. The LaserSharp digital converting technology opens up new opportunities for TLM Laser in packaging. TLM Laser will initially focus on breathable packaging and easy-open applications, working closely with packaging manufacturers and engineers to develop new product-specific processes or enhance and upgrade existing manufacturing processes. Laser perforation produces clean, strong, and


precise micro-holes, enabling vapour and gas exchange processes through the packaging material. Unlike traditional mechanical perforating methods, which can potentially puncture or rip flexible packaging films, laser perforating produces cauterised micro-perforated patterns with precise round holes. In addition, the non- contact nature of the laser process ensures that holes are produced cleanly and free from any processing debris.


LaserSharp technology also has the ability to perforate a blind hole to a specific depth into the packaging film, while maintaining the barrier between the product and the outside environment. Laser micro-perforating extends the shelf life of perishable foods by improving the atmosphere and controlling the amount of oxygen, carbon dioxide and moisture inside the package. This process also helps reduce condensation and bacteria growth, while keeping the product inside fresh and maintaining flavour. Breathable applications have also been constructed for modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), microwavable steam-release features, venting and rapid-fill packaging. www.tlm-laser.com


The critical hub of the smart TruDisk beam source is the built-in control system known as CPX. This is where all the condition data and process parameters are collected. During processing, a broad array of sensors measure multiple parameters, including the actual laser output at microsecond intervals, all internal and external signal characteristics, the utilisation rate of the beam source, and the condition of additional components. The new generation TruDisk lasers also incorporate Precision Time Protocol, which synchronises all the sensors and provides them with an identical time stamp. With the customer’s prior approval, Trumpf can also analyse data parameters, carry out algorithm-based trend analysis and take targeted measurements to determine the risk of potential laser failure in advance to prevent unscheduled downtime. Bystronic is expanding the BySprint Fiber laser cutting system with the 12020 large-format


system. This increases laser cutting productivity and the diversity of cutting applications. The machine can be equipped with the Fiber 3000, 4000, or 6000 laser sources.


The large-format laser machine can process metal sheets up to a length of 12 metres. This increases the machine’s productivity, because parts can be nested more efficiently in large metal sheets. The BySoft 7 process software supports the user with intelligent nesting procedures. In addition, large parts can be cut, as well as diverse small parts, without having to interrupt the laser cutting process. Smaller sheets can also be processed by lining them up on the BySprint Fiber’s long cutting table. Bystronic also offers the BySprint Fiber in the formats 8020, 6520, 4020, and 3015. The laser includes a smart cooling system operating at feed temperatures of up to 26°C. This eliminates the need for an external cooling unit in most cases. The lasers are equipped with a new pulse function. This makes it possible to ramp the current of the pump diodes down to 0 Amps, even during very short laser-off times between two processing steps.
