VDMA hybrid lightweight construction guide

Members of the VDMA’s Hybrid Lightweight Technologies working group have summarised the current status of production and joining processes in hybrid lightweight construction in a new guide. The working group deals with production processes of hybrid lightweight components by using fibre-reinforced composites and metals. The guide gives a quick overview of the established processes. Every technology is summarised in a short profile and explained via a schematic diagram with the processes’ basic conditions and parameters, as well as their limitations of use. They are supplemented by specifications on possible material combinations, recyclability and application examples. The application potential of every material combination has been evaluated and assigned to the suitable production and joining processes. The aim of multi-material design is to create economic construction components and end products with improved function. The challenge is to optimally combine the different lightweight materials and advance the automation of the production processes. This can be done by production-integrated hybridisation or subsequent joining of individual components to a hybrid complete system. Interested firms and research institutes can join and contribute to the working group. https://lightweight.vdma.org/

PROCESSING HEAD CoaxPrinter for laser cladding

Precitec has released its CoaxPrinter laser cladding solution, which permits

multidirectional processing of the additive material wire.

The processing head is able to feed wire coaxially into the interaction zone. The beam profile is circular and focused directly into the interaction point between the wire and workpiece surface. Thus, the CoaxPrinter allows shadow-free wire feeding, omnidirectional-intensity distribution, homogenised preheating and an energy input perfectly controlled for the process. The wire feeding is sensor-monitored, which is ideal for automated manufacturing. Cladding with wire gives economical, clean and

environmentally-friendly processes for 3D printing, for various surface coatings or for wear protection. Processing with wire produces no contamination

LASER SYSTEMS

Foba Y.1000 laser marker The new 100W fibre laser, Foba Y.1000, operates up to 40 per cent faster than common 50W lasers, and can mark substrates that are usually difficult to mark with other models. The machine applies robust marks on heavy wear products to ensure abrasion-proof legibility. The 100W fibre laser is perfectly suited for marking and engraving automobile and aerospace components; the marks are robust and ensure long-term legibility throughout the product life

cycle. This applies to high-wear products like engine components, ball bearings, break systems or extruded products and cables. Best mark contrast and resistance qualities ensure reliable part traceability and protection against product forgery. To meet different speed and contrast specifications for customised applications, four focal widths are available, so that marking field dimensions and marking speeds can be adjusted. Even for on-the-fly-marking it is possible to obtain marking field dimensions of up to 498 x 367mm.

Variable scan head tuning is available in two modes – for high-quality or high-speed purposes – and can achieve line speeds of up to 600 metres per minute. The laser beam can be positioned at two angles, either 90 degrees top down, or zero degrees straight forward.

The system is compatible with Ethernet and RS-323, and, from Q2 2018, Profibus, Profinet and TCP/IP. This makes it easy to set up software configuration for integration into production lines. www.fobalaser.com

of the surrounding areas or surfaces. The CoaxPrinter can use almost every solid or

flux-cored wire for welding or soldering applications in standard dimensions. The processing head is also compatible with common multi-kilowatt fibre-coupled diode lasers with a core diameter of the fibre of 0.6mm and a power of 6kWs. Industrial robots or portal systems serve as a manipulator. www.precitec.de
