Golden years

As we enter the new year, Electro Optics celebrates its 50th anniversary. The first magazine was published in 1968, only eight years after the invention of the laser, and has evolved to cover the ever-increasing applications and markets enabled by lasers and light-based systems. To mark our 50th anniversary, we

have a special 17-page supplement starting on page 4, featuring articles from senior figures across various photonics companies, associations, and research centres discussing current and future trends. One issue brought up by several commentators is the challenge of finding technically-skilled people, highlighting the importance of education outreach and training programmes for ensuring future growth. Another factor that could play a role in solving this challenge is improving the uptake and retention of women – who make up less than 20 per cent of the workforce – in photonics careers, writes optical engineer Katie Schwertz, in her article on page 28. Another reason to be excited about going into 2018 is the possibility of seeing some sunshine in San Francisco during Photonics West. We have a preview starting on page 34, detailing some of what to expect at the exhibition and conferences. Electro Optics will be at the show, so if you’d like to set up a meeting or say hello, please get in touch.
