Morris Site Machinery Morris & Co Welsh Bridge Headquarters Richard Denholm
Report by Peter Brett Morris Site Machinery has a turnover of millions and is well known for its
lighting towers, generators, welding machines and pumps. Having been invited to a tour of MSM’s Gosberton premises near Spalding in Lincolnshire, I came away with a much better appreciation of this longstanding family business and its associated businesses. It is a family business that was started in 1869 – with just two years to go until
its 150th anniversary. The members of the wider family still run it in a daily ‘hands- on’ way, with the help of over 700 staff in various positions. Headquarters for the Morris group is in a historic Queen Anne Style building
they built on Welsh bridge in Shrewsbury. The Morris Group is at once both proud to be traditional and thoroughly modern too – a centrepiece at its HQ is the main oak entrance doors – carefully restored from an old steam ship and repurposed to fit the building. The Morris Group has three major divisions, namely, Morris Property, Morris
Care and Morris Site Machinery. These may seem like very disparate areas of business, and yet the Morris family have managed to generate some remarkable synergies between the businesses that help to make them all very successful. Morris Property comprises two elements – the management of its own
portfolio of 200+ properties and the Construction side which builds both for the company itself as well as for external clients. The Company has over 100 years’ experience in housebuilding and property renovation. Under this umbrella it supports a thriving bespoke joinery business. Morris Care is aimed at the high end of the care market and employs the bulk
of the 700 staff. Often based in converted stately homes, it can use the skills of Morris Property to rebuild and repurpose newly purchased premises to a high standard. Maybe out on different branch compared to the previous two businesses, is
Morris Site Machinery, and of course ToolBusiness and Hire is going to concentrate its attention here with help from MSM’s Sales Director Richard Denholm and Robin Parker, Sales Manager. ‘Built to Perform’ and ‘Excellence as Standard’ – Brand Identities Morris Site Machinery has a strong British pedigree and prides itself on being
British designers and manufacturers of its most well-known products like welders and lighting-towers. To meet the needs of an ever more complex market, MSM has a number of brands either manufactured by itself or which it distributes under its umbrella. SMC –Lighting Towers and Generators The SMC brand, for example, consists of
British designed and manufactured (largely in- house) lighting towers and gensets. These machines are marketed throughout the world so need to be robust and reliable – as well as fuel efficient, low maintenance –and providing the best light too. ARC GEN ArcGen, as the name implies, is all about
welding and generating. From the biggest super silent 500CC/CV welder generator mounted on a trailer down to the smallest freestanding machine, they are designed to be silent, safe, efficient and as up-to-date as possible. Customers for this brand include the

military services and Network Rail. Having been tested thoroughly at the prototyping stage, MSM is confident that the range of ArcGen machines can stand the rigours of an industrial worksite. Not bad for welders that can do MIG, TIG and stick welding equally well. Denyo Generators If you ever see a pink
Arcgen 500CC welder generator
generator on a film set or at a festival it is most likely a Denyo supplied by MSM. They are increasingly popular with filmmakers and the like because they are ultra-quiet and efficient, as well as looking ’cool’. Anywhere generator noise is likely to be a problem, there you will find a Denyo. Hilta For over 40 years UK-made Hilta’s
range of pumps and pressure washers have been catering for everyone from the flooded householder to the
Denyo Eventa 60kVA ultra silent generator
emergency services. Mounted on trailers or trolleys, or just in a portable cage, they can be bought or hired to deal with extra water, or supply high pressure cleaning water. Inmesol Recently added to the mix of
gensets, they are Spanish made and range from 20KVA to a massive 500KVA for really demanding applications like floods and other local disasters. They include features such as telemetry and plug-and-go sockets that are needed for maintenance and ease of use.
Makinex Australian brand Makinex
SMC TL90 Ultimate 5 Makinex Easy Lift 140
is represented in the MSM line-up by only five products - but each of them has a niche that would appeal to specialist needs. I have tested the Makinex Easy Lift 140 – the perfect way for an individual operator to lift, move and load heavy items. The Makinex Hose-2-Go is another interesting product.
