Our 2017 Tech Factor winners are STEAMing ahead with Project Refurb
Open Academy, Norwich won our first prize of £10,000 in this year’s Tech Factor competition. Their submission wowed our judges, not only because of its altruistic nature, but also because their commitment to tech literacy mirrors our own.

Their entry idea was Project Refurb. Open Academy are planning to invest in new PCs and refurbish their old ones to distribute in their local community. The idea is that students learn basic computer maintenance and some fundamental computer software and network skills.
Project Refurb is a fantastic opportunity for Open Academy’s young people to learn valuable STEAM skills. From engaging students in experiential learning to encouraging them to embrace collaboration, learning to refurbish PCs will be as valuable to students as learning to code. They’ll learn to persist with problem-solving and develop a maker mindset through this build your own project.
