Indra’s Net & The Web of Lif

by Casandr asandra Akins, LMHC

know is the largest mass murder in our country’s history. Our communities, our city and people all over the world have been in shock ever since. This experience has been a wake-up call for us to really refl ect on the state of our collective consciousness. This experience has been an invitation to step into a bigger story of ourselves and therefore a more generative life. Indra’s Net is also known as the web of

life. Ancient Buddhist philosophy teaches us that Indra is the God of all Gods and that his net expands the entire universe. It is the fabric of the universe and the structure of all Reality. At each juncture there is a multifaceted jewel. Each jewel refl ects all of the other jewels so perfectly to show that each one is intimately connected to all of the others. And each jewel represents a cell, an atom, individual consciousness, a Human Being - YOU and THEM. When any jewel in the net is touched in even the slightest way, it creates a ripple where all the other jewels are also affected. But what does this mean? Simply put, it means that the energetic forces of our individual psyches or souls are so foreign to us that we don’t even know that we are being controlled by them. It is these forces that contribute to the ever growing state of mental illness in our country and in the world. This is what the mystics and spiritual leaders mean when they talk about seeking enlightenment, becoming more mindful, etc. They mean to turn the face of our soul towards the highest expression of ourselves: to become better Human Beings. And those of us who have done any degree of spiritual work know that along with becoming “enlightened” comes an honest recognition of who we are as human beings and what experiences have shaped our individual lives. As we continue on the path of our soul’s

evolution, it is important to create a life in which we are in constant dialogue with the innate wisdom of our Higher Self. The world needs us now more than

ever! We cannot forget that we all have a bigger story to live and that we have under our very control a way to touch Indra’s net in a positive way. Our compassionate and constructive life choices can produce a ripple of benefi cial actions that will reverberate throughout the universe. This is good news! We can hold steady and let Love, Tolerance and Compassion be the light that we shine in the world.

Show up for yourself fi rst and do your

inner work so that you can mirror to others a spiritual maturity of love that brings order out of chaos. Things you can do:

Buddhism is an education, not a religion. We do not worship the Buddha; we respect him as a teacher. Buddha’s teachings enable us to escape from suff ering and attain happiness. “Buddha” means enlightenment or understanding. Complete understanding is when one realizes the truth about life and the universe. It is when one is apart from all delusions. Cultivation is not something unusual, but part of our everyday life. Whenever we recognize and correct our faults, we are cultivating.
