Welcome

This introduction, written from the confines of my home, is not what I had hoped for you, our graduating students. We find ourselves in the most unusual of circumstances, separated from our families, friends and colleagues and uncertain, as I write this, about how the coming months will unfold. Postponing graduation ceremonies was not a decision we took lightly, but it is clear that it was the right decision.

This year is the first time in Aston’s history as a University that we have had to delay our graduation celebrations. You are also a special cohort in another way – Aston’s 100,000th graduate would have crossed the stage this summer. As soon as we are able to, we will hold physical ceremonies to celebrate this milestone as well as your personal achievement, but we are deeply disappointed that we are unable to meet you in person to congratulate you today.

Professor Alec Cameron Vice-Chancellor & Chief Executive BSc, BE, DPhil, MS, CCMI

Yet today is definitely a day for celebration. It marks the successful completion of your studies and is a time for you to feel a great sense of pride in your achievements. At Aston, one of our aims has been to provide you with the intellectual challenge, knowledge and skills to enable you to thrive in the fast-changing world. This has never been more important, given the circumstances we find ourselves in now. Most importantly you will have learnt how to learn. In this age of the ‘knowledge economy’ your ability to continually refresh and develop your knowledge and skills will be your passport to exploring interesting and challenging roles throughout your career.

I hope fond memories of Aston will always endure and that they will encompass both your intellectual development and affectionate recollections of friendship. As well as being a celebration for those of you who are graduating, this is also a special time for your families and those who have provided support over the past years. Take the opportunity to thank your parents, families and friends for their support – even if it can only be a WhatsApp message or Zoom conversation.

Whatever route your future success takes, we wish you well and are keen to know where your lives and careers lead you. As part of our growing alumni community of 100,000 graduates, we hope that you will keep in touch and come back to visit. Enjoy your celebrations – the world awaits you!
