LATEST, NEW & UPDATED STANDARDS IN THE FIELD OF ENVIRONMENTAL TESTING Written and compiled by Consultant David Richards Hon.FSEE, CEng, CEnv
This issue of the standards reports marks 20 years since I took over producing the report from Stan Wall. Before he retired, Stan generated a standards report for the journal for a similar period as myself. Although the report has changed somewhat over the years, the most notable difference from those early reports is the larger number of environmental standards which feature. This is partly due to the inclusion of standards related to sustainability, which hardly existed 20 years ago. However, it is also due to the more flexible period between review and updates, now operated by the international standards organisations. It is also notable that very few environmental standards now originate solely within the UK. Currently, the vast majority of environmental

standards originate from the international standards organisations of IEC and ISO, although a few originate from the European standards organisations CEN, CENELEC and ETSI. BS EN IEC 60068-2-5 Environmental testing. Tests. Test S. Simulated solar radiation at ground level and guidance for solar radiation testing and weathering. This update was proposed by a small group of test houses (in Japan and the USA) who wanted to use the test procedure to be more focused on evaluating the (actinic) degradation caused by solar radiation. Transportation and Handling. These two standards represent the first of a series of updates to the 60721-3 series of documents. They set out the environmental conditions that electro-technical equipment may experience during normal worldwide usage. BS EN IEC 60068-2-10 Environmental testing. Tests. Test J and guidance. Mould growth. This document has been reissued as an amendment. Although the standard report does not normally include amendments (which imply less than 10% of the text has changed), the change to this document is worthy of note. The modification to the Mould growth now permits evaluation to be undertaken at material specimen level rather than just on complete equipment (which is still permitted).
