/// SHOCK ISOLATION\\\

Wire rope isolators keep ship equipment safe

Shock and vibration isolation on board sea faring vessels gains strength with wire rope isolation

P

rotecting sensitive equipment aboard vessels has been achieved using wire rope isolators for a long time already.

But now, military and defence technology sup- plier ITT Enidine has gained full RoHS compli- ance on its products to make reducing shock and vibration transmission to instrument housing etc more environmentally friendly. According to Mark Gilson of ITT Enidine, the

company’s military customer base relies on its energy absorption and vibration isolation products for their demanding applications. “Enidine’s wire rope products and High En-

ergy Rope Mount (HERM) isolators protect 810G and 901E grade equipment, minimising high levels of equipment shock and vibra- tion for increased protection, perfor- mance and product longevity,” he says. Both HERM and wire rope products

combine shock absorption and vibra- tion isolation into a single solution for maximum value.

HERM isolators \\\ HERM isolators are manufactured using wire

rope overmoulded with highly damped elas- tomer for a fail-safe design with greater load range than standard wire rope isolators. Dur- ing moulding, the wire rope is forced into a more elliptical shape, offering improved ten- sion deflection and less compression than other wire rope isolators. The additional damping and tension de- flection results in lower shock response ac- celerations. HERM isolators are integrated into several naval applications including navy cab- inet isolation and rafted deck systems, radar systems, weapons and vehicles.

Wire rope isolators \\\ Wire rope isolators are constructed with stain-

less-steel cable and aluminium retaining bars to attenuate shock and vibration, protecting electronics and equipment. The all-metal con- struction ensures they are completely unaf- fected by oil, chemicals, abrasives, ozone or temperature extremes.

vibration isolation, above; wire rope isolation relies on the spring effect of the coil wire combined with the damping effect of the spiral stranding, inset right; an alternative to coiled wire is circular arch isolation technology, left

The company also provides skid isolators, which are designed to protect and ensure the performance of equipment within critical sys- tems. These large displacement isolators pro- vide shock and vibration isolation under a range of environmental conditions and enable safe transport of missiles using a unique elas- tomeric technology. The US Navy’s Helios laser weapons system relies on a combination of skid isolators and HERMs to protect it. Shock Isolator Double Acting Spring (SIDAS)

systems are designed to combine a preloaded mechanical spring to give static preload forces with a low-pressure hydraulic damper to provide dynamic damping forces.

Arched isolators \\\ An alternative to wire rope isolators is the Cir-

cular Aluminium Arch isolator, which is avail- able from Socitec and which also uses wire rope to provide the spring/damper combina- tion necessary for vibration isolation. The CA Series Isolator is made of captive,

flexible wire rope with upper and lower at- tachment plates. The stranded-wire rope ele- ments provide a high degree of damping with measurable predictable shock and vibration isolation performance. Designed to protect sensitive equipment in severe environments, the CA Series is ideal for isolating panel boards, wall mounted computers and acces- sories, medical equipment, closed-circuit tele- vision and other wall mounted equipment. The CA Series Circular Arch Wire Rope iso-

lators consist of stainless steel, standard wire ropes. Wire ropes on CA models are connected to zinc-plated, low-carbon, steel mounting discs. The isolators offer three-plane, all-axis isolation that permits use in any attitude – vertically, horizontally and lateral. The isola- tors provide low frequency, high vibration iso- lation damping in a failsafe design. Standard spaced washers prevent the isolator coils from moving upward under load above the plane of the upper mounting disc – an effect know as heart-shaping. C&VT
