Dynamic Tilt Measurement


Dynamic tilt measurement sensor provides analysis of inclination and 3D acceleration for ADAS development and for off-road vehicle testing.


has been created through the combination of accelerometers, gyroscopes and a temperature sensor with advanced calibration and correction algorithms to provide accurate 3D acceleration, 3D rate and pitch & roll measurement in dynamic, moving vehicle applications. The MTLT305D uses advanced sensor fusion (Extended Kalman Filtering) and calibration algorithms to achieve 0.5 degree tilt and <10 milli-g acceleration accuracy in a wide variety of dynamic conditions. It is calibrated to accurately operate over a wide temperature range of -40C to +85C. The completely sealed compact module with integrated connector is perfect for rugged construction, off road and agriculture applications.

CONNECTIVITY The device includes CAN J1939 and RS232 interfaces for network connectivity. The miniature plastic housing is durable under hazardous environments (IP68 and IP69K ratings). It supports a wide 4.9 V to 32 V supply input range and is qualified for use in both 12 V and 24 V vehicle platforms. The MTLT305D supports industry standard SAE J1939 messaging over the CAN bus and so it easy to integrate. It also includes software with a simple to use graphical interface to display, record, playback and analyse all the sensor parameters over its RS232 port. The software can also be used to set a wide range of user-configurable fields in the sensor to optimise the system performance for various dynamic applications.


ADAPTABILITY The sensors measure the tilt angle (both roll and pitch) of an object with respect to the horizontal axis in a static environment. Additionally, these high performance sensors incorporate two micro- machined low-g accelerometers, one oriented along

the X-axis and one along the Y-axis. This combination of measurement capabilities makes the sensor very flexible in its application.

help keep industrial platforms level as well as monitor the angle of solar power arrays,

for example. In off road construction equipment such as


excavators, the 3D Accelerometers and 3D Gyros in the sensor housing provide positioning information and tilt warnings. They also have advanced algorithms running inside calculating orientation and providing Pitch, Roll, 3D Rate and 3D acceleration on the CAN bus. This attitude information, the known geometry of the excavator and motion of the chassis are combined to calculate the exact position, attitude and motion of the bucket and its teeth. The tilt sensor also provides precision info regarding the angle of a lift arm on various construction equipment and cranes to ensure that the operator does not overly extend the arm and cause the machine to topple or malfunction. In forklifts, the tilt sensor helps keep the lift arm from being overloaded and toppling over. It can also help to ensure safe operation on angled surfaces.


VALUABLE INFORMATION With typically more than 20 microprocessors existing in current automotive designs, there is a lot of information flowing through in-vehicle communication systems regarding fuel efficiency, engine management and advance safety systems. As vehicles become more processor intensive with the onset of partial and eventually full autonomy, the role of the tilt sensors will become more significant in delivering valuable information in prototyping, test & validation and even in production vehicles where autonomy will require accurate attitude and acceleration information.
