The University’s Head of Estates, Peter

Czarnomski, said it was the best construction project he has ever been involved with. His colleague, Mark Ashmore, the University’s Project Manager, added: “I thought Willmott Dixon’s programme management was excellent. They were very open about it, never covering things up. Cost management was very well done.” Kent was so impressed with the project

that it committed to working with Willmott Dixon on some new projects. It was quickly rewarded the contract to build the University’s new Economics Building. And Kent recommended the contractor to two other universities: one of them, Kingston University, awarded it a £50m contract. Willmott Dixon also achieved its social

and environmental goals: 100% of the site’s 1,156 sqm of waste was diverted from landfill; 11 apprentice training weeks were delivered on the project; £16.3m of additional value to local community was created; and 87% of the days were worked by local people. The result is a new and vibrant campus

building that has exceeded all Kent’s expectations and which will draw students from the UK and across the world for many decades to come.

horizontal fin profiles in bronze, silver and Regency gold finishes to create deep window reveals and control solar gain on the first floor of the building. The architect for the Sibson was

Penoyre & Prasad, whose Senior Architect Michael Fostiropoulos said: “Kawneer’s ability to produce bespoke adaptations of its standard profiles played a crucial role in delivering our vision for the cladding design. Beautiful curved glazing at the corners of the building and large-scale shop front style glazing at the ground floor ensured Sibson met our client’s aspirations for a project of the highest technical quality. The façade plays a central role in expressing the building as embedded in its woodland surroundings. In addition, sustainability played a key role in us specifying aluminium. With lower embedded carbon emissions and higher

recyclability than most alternative metals, the material contributed to Sibson achieving BREEAM Excellent accreditation.” The key to the project’s success, says

Willmott Dixon, was the collaborative working relationship it established with the client throughout the project. This collaborative spirit applied

throughout the supply chain too. As just one example, the contractor was instructed to install a number of internal glazed screens fairly late on. This was disruptive to the programme’s timing and resourcing but thanks to the excellent relationships established, it was able to accommodate the changes within the schedule. The Sibson was built under a JCT

D&B contract, with the design by Penoyre and Prasad. Work started on site in April 2015 and the building was handed over in January 2017, on time and to the £26m budget.
