Liverpool John Moores University unveils plans for Copperas Hill

L

IVERPOOL John Moores University (LJMU) has released plans to create a new student destination in Liverpool

city centre. Copperas Hill, a strategically important

site located close to Lime Street Station, was formerly occupied by the Royal Mail Sorting Office, which closed in 2010. This building was demolished in 2017, paving the way for LJMU’s plans. LJMU is planning to develop the three

and a half acre Copperas Hill site in two phases. Subject to planning approval, Phase 1 will see the development of two new buildings, a Student Life Building and Sports Building by summer 2020. The Student Life Building will house a range of student-facing services, such as careers advice, international exchanges, and counselling and wellbeing support. A new Learning Commons will also be developed

plus new dedicated space for the students’ union. The new sports building will

have indoor facilities, including an 8 court sports hall and gymnasium, which will support teaching and research in sports studies as well as providing new sports facilities for students, staff and students’ union clubs and societies. Professor Peter Byers, Pro-Vice-Chancellor

(Education) said: “The redevelopment of the Copperas Hill site is an investment in the future of our students and the future of Liverpool. We are committed to delivering a life-changing student experience and these new facilities will enable students to maximise their time at LJMU, both academically and socially, and support their transition into professional employment.” The £64million development has been

designed to

address existing constraints such as poor pedestrian

access and mark the entrance to the

Knowledge Quarter. Faithful+Gould will act as project managers,

quantity surveyors, employers’ agent and principal designers after being appointed via the Pagabo Professional Services in Construction and Premises public sector framework, an OJEU- compliant framework. The architects are Sheppard Robson.

University of Cambridge embarks on latest Cavendish site phase

J

ESTICO + Whiles has been given the go ahead for the proposed new Cavendish Laboratory building

called Cavendish III at the University of Cambridge, a major project to replace existing facilities for the Department of Physics. The 35,000 sqm building has been

designed with CH2M, which was recently acquired by Jacobs in December 2017, acting as technical architects on the laboratories and specialist cleanroom areas.

The scheme will enhance the West

Cambridge research campus, and aims to create a globally significant research hub for the university’s physical sciences departments. It will also serve to support entrepreneurship and collaboration within the industry. Jestico + Whiles has also designed the

Shared Facilities Hub, a 4,700 sq m shared facilities building located at the heart of the campus, which will provide teaching and learning spaces for all members of

the West Cambridge campus, alongside catering and library facilities. Paul Milliner, Head of Estate Strategy

and Planning at Cambridge University, said: ‘‘The Shared Facilities Hub represents a step change in the way the University will provide much needed amenities on the West Cambridge Site. The new vision for West Cambridge places far more emphasis on openness and transparency encouraging staff to engage beyond their building to collaborate with people from other departments, industry partners and the wider community.’’ Heinz Richardson, Director at Jestico +

Whiles said: “We are thrilled to be working with a world leading institution on two significant projects contributing to the University’s wider development for West Cambridge.” Cavendish III is scheduled to open at

the end of 2022, with construction expected to start in 2019.
