AECOM-led team to design Moorfields/ UCL joint facility
A
N AECOM-led team has been appointed by Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, UCL
Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Charity to deliver Oriel, a new joint facility at St Pancras Hospital in London. AECOM and its partners Penoyre &
Prasad and White Arkitekter will deliver all architectural design and related services for the project, which aims to bring together clinical care, research and education expertise for the first time in one flexible, fully integrated building. It is proposed that all services provided at Moorfields Eye Hospital on City Road and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology on Bath Street will relocate to the new facility. Focused on maximising collaboration
and knowledge exchange, the flexible and adaptive design includes an ‘oriel’ at its centre, intended to be the social heart of the building and enabling greater interaction between patients, clinicians and researchers. It is inspired by the Moorfield Eye Hospital crest ‘Fiat Lux’ (Let there be Light). With an interior infused with natural light, the proposal plays homage to modern and light-filled Scandinavian design principles. Global infrastructure services firm
AECOM will lead the team, acting as lead designer and also providing civil, structural and building services engineering, as well as other specialist consultancy services. Award-winning architectural practice Penoyre & Prasad
will be the lead architect, setting the overall design strategy and the architectural vision for the building. White Arkitekter will be responsible for designing the interiors and external landscapes including the ambience and lighting of all public spaces, contributing knowledge from its practice based research into healthcare environments. Camden Council is leading a public
consultation on the project. If approved, the new facility could be open to patients in 2025/26.

Cambridge’s exam body moves into new headquarters
E
RIC Parry Architects has completed a new headquarters for Cambridge Assessment, the University of
Cambridge’s world-renowned exams group and one of the largest employers in the city. Known as The Triangle Building, the new
360,000 sq ft building will accommodate the growth of the company from 2,500 to 3,000 employees and consolidate office space previously housed in eleven locations around the city onto one site, bringing all Cambridge-based staff under one roof. The Triangle Building underlines Cambridge Assessment’s continuing commitment to the city of Cambridge’s development as a centre of educational excellence in the global market. Eric Parry, Director of Eric Parry Architects
said:‘‘Cambridge Assessment is one of the world’s most-respected education institutions. Our new headquarters, The Triangle Building, provides an inspiring, stimulating and uplifting workspace in surroundings that are commensurate with the international stature and ambition of the organisation. The Triangle Building is a major new academic building in a town renowned throughout the world for its
architecture of education and learning. Our design draws on the atmosphere of Cambridge colleges, blending their mix of materials and focus on landscaped exterior spaces with an institutional modernity appropriate to a company headquarters on this scale. Saul Nassé, Cambridge Assessment
Group Chief Executive: “The Triangle Building gives Cambridge Assessment a
collaborative, innovative and flexible working environment which allows the Group to better serve its customers and stakeholders responsibly.” Eric Parry Architects’ brief was to create
a new headquarters that would allow Cambridge Assessment to grow, while bringing its projected number of 3000 staff together into a single building. The triangular site that gives the development it name is located towards the southern fringe of Cambridge, bordered by the railway line to the east, large-scale offices and the printworks of the Cambridge University Press to the south and west, and new build housing, including the Stirling Prize-winning Accordia development to the north. The design team included Bouygues
UK as contractor, and Ramboll as structural engineer.
