University of Portsmouth unveils plans for sustainable sports facility

T

HE University of Portsmouth has unveiled plans for a sustainable sports facility produced by

international design practice FaulknerBrowns Architects. The new sports facility is the first major phase of Portsmouth University’s estate development masterplan, which aims to reshape its city centre campus to enhance the student experience and strengthen connections with rest of the city. The proposed plans will significantly enhance the non-academic life of students, promoting health and wellbeing through the provision of a wide range of opportunities for activity and movement. The practice was appointed following

an open design competition last summer and will now lead a team of Max Fordham (M&E), Mott MacDonald (structural and civil engineering) and LDA Design (landscape design) in delivering the state- of-the-art facility. The proposals include an eight-court sports hall, eight-lane 25m swimming pool, fitness suite, multi- purpose studios, squash courts, climbing wall and a ski simulator as well as teaching facilities and office space. The site for the new sports facility is

located on the corner of Ravelin Park at an important juncture between the university campus and the city centre. It therefore presents an opportunity to create a welcoming gateway into the university quarter and establish a public facing presence in the city centre. The site strategy has been developed to grasp this opportunity whilst responding sensitively to the park and surrounding context. The building design sets new standards

for sustainability for a sports building and as a result is on target to be the first to be BREEAM rated Outstanding. Considered arrangement of the building’s spaces provides the opportunity to exploit natural light and ventilation, whilst top lighting of the sports hall and pool hall provides further opportunity for energy reduction. An array of photovoltaic panels and a biodiverse green roof bolster the buildings sustainability credentials further. Michael Hall, Partner at FaulknerBrowns

Architects, said: “We are delighted to not only be working with an aspirational client on one of their first key buildings in their estate development masterplan, but to be responsible for delivering a sports facility with industry leading

sustainability credentials.” Irina Korneychuk, Project Leader at

FaulknerBrowns, said: “We are excited to unveil our plans for a sports facility which promotes integration of the University campus with its surroundings and applies the contemporary principles of active design. This will create an environment which promotes health and wellbeing by inspiring people to be more active, throughout the University of Portsmouth, and the city as a whole.” Professor Graham Galbraith, Vice-

Chancellor at the University of Portsmouth, said: “We are excited to announce plans for the first building of our £400 million estate masterplan. It is our priority to create a facility that will provide the best experience for our students and staff, as well as reaching out to our local community.”

Sth Wales University selects Garran Lockers T

HE University of South Wales has recently undergone a £15 million development to launch its custom-

designed sporting performance facility, close to the Pontypridd campus in Rhydyfelin, South Wales. This state-of-the- art sports park provides students and athletes with the latest equipment and training facilities, with professional teams such as Cardiff City Football Club, the British and Irish Lions and even international rugby teams from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa already benefiting from the facilities. The site houses a specialist centre for

strength and conditioning along with observation galleries, changing rooms and an internal full-size 3G pitch built to the Fifa Pro and World Rugby 22 standards - making it the only pitch of its kind in Wales. Garran Lockers was approached by Kier to provide personal storage lockers and changing room equipment to

enhance the high quality finish required for the project. The core objective was to design,

manufacture and install a quality, bespoke selection of storage and changing room solutions, something regularly provided for customers across the UK and Ireland. With the design and manufacture both taking place at Garran’s facility in Caerphilly, installations can be specific to customer requirements. The final design featured lockers, bench seating, cloakroom units and hook boards, which were all colour co-ordinated with the recognised USW colour scheme of red, white and black. Nigel Hayes, Site Manager, Kier Construction commented: “Lockers and cloakroom equipment supplied and installed by Garran Lockers have been an important addition to the prestigious Sports facility at the University of South Wales in Treforest. As the main contractor Kier Construction

was very pleased with the design element, customer service and attention to detail offered.”
