Paul Cluett, managing director, Alliance Leisure Services

Alliance Leisure develops facilities on behalf of local authorities and trusts wishing to improve or expand their leisure products and services. The biggest challenge

we are facing with Brexit is the uncertainty surrounding it making it almost impossible to plan for. That said, it is liable to affect many aspects of our business, from capital investment decisions by clients through to the supply chain. Local authorities are already under huge

financial strain. Brexit may result in further austerity measures from central government, which will increase the pressure on non-

statutory services like leisure. It’s possible that we may see some leisure centre closures as a result. However, this may be the trigger for local authorities to take stock of their leisure portfolio with a view to making it more commercially viable.

Brexit will also have repercussions for users of leisure buildings

Brexit will also have repercussions for users

of leisure buildings. Job losses and reduced consumer spending are real concerns, which will put further pressure on users of the facilities.

Uncertainty makes business planning for

new developments very difficult. How will Brexit affect the value of Sterling and therefore the cost of raw materials brought into the UK? It’s another question we can’t answer at this time, but I think we can expect some difficulties for our supply chain, particularly where they source materials from the EU. For our part, Alliance will continue to work

closely with our clients and suppliers to mitigate risk at every step of the development process and we await the final decision on what Brexit will look like and will then be ready to respond to the demands of the market.

Createability is a design and construction company specialising in delivering bespoke environments for the leisure, corporate and education sectors.

At present, Brexit brings so many

uncertainties that no one really knows what the fall out will be, but it’s likely to affect the industry in three ways: workforce, materials and lead-in times. We’ve taken steps to protect clients and their

projects from its affects; notifying clients they may need to put finances in place should costs

escalate beyond our control and to plan for potential delays due to supplies or skilled labour shortages. Planning for the worst case scenarios makes business sense. I hope existing Europeans working in the UK

will be protected and that new workers will still be welcomed for their skills, ultimately improving the quality of trades people. Materials coming into the UK are likely to be delayed at ports, albeit it is hoped this can be minimised with government interventions in place. Of course prices could, and probably will, go up. On the positive side this will mean companies such as ours encouraging the use of UK suppliers and manufacturers, which can only serve to boost the UK market. We’re already staffed to manage these

issues, which we hope will make us more attractive to clients post Brexit. Our aim will be to sign contracts early on, so we can really work

hard with our clients to secure the best materials and the strongest workforce to deliver their projects in our usual manner; on time and on budget.
