EDITOR’S NOTE Drivers for change

As reported in the last edition of mhdf, the recently-published NHS Long-Term Plan puts mental health services, and the estate from which they are delivered, at the forefront of the future health and wellbeing of the population.

And, if the drivers for change hadn’t already been widely

accepted, last month saw the release of a new report which reiterates the challenge facing the sector moving forwards.

See our news page (p7) for details of how an independent committee has slammed

current inpatient accommodation as ‘institutional’, accused planners of being overly ‘risk and infection averse’, and called for additional capital investment from the Government.

Innovation in building and interior products will, of course, be key to overcoming some of these issues. And, in this edition, you can read about some of the work currently underway.

This includes a focus on mental health blinds and integral systems (p17), which are

promoting privacy and dignity among patients at the same time as ensuring the safety of both people with mental health problems and the staff who care for them.

And we ask whether the ongoing trend for reminiscence artwork in dementia care settings is actually creating more of a problem (p21).

In May some of the latest innovations in the sector will come under the spotlight at the 2019 Design in Mental Health Conference and Exhibition, and you can find out more in our preview on page 15.

Finally, in our projects section, we speak to the team behind the design of Caudwell

International Children’s Centre, the country’s first dedicated independent autism support centre.

Turn to page 8 to find out more about this incredible project.

Coming up in mhdf, we will be looking at topics including window restrictors, arts and health, seclusion room design, landscaping and fencing solutions, dementia care access systems, dementia furniture products, and mental health entertainment and storage.
