EDITOR’S NOTE A new era for design

The mental health sector is celebrating a major milestone in building design, with news earlier in the summer that West London NHS Trust has finally taken formal possession of the new Broadmoor Hospital.

Following months of delays, the new facilities will open later this year or early next year, marking the start of a new era in the delivery of mental health services.See our news pages for

more details of the project (p7).

Also in this edition, there is a review of the 2019 Design in Mental Health Conference and Exhibition (p16), including comments from industry experts who are concerned that fears over risk are standing in the way of good design.

Indepth features include a look at mental health furniture (p13), in particular modern wardrobe designs, which are being led by the drive to create more-homely environments for services users.

And we explore how a fresh warning from health and safety chiefs has put the design and installation of window restrictors at the forefront of discussions among estates and facilities professionals (p20).

Projects in this edition include plans for a new dementia care village in Birkenhead (p8); and the signage approach at a new autism unit in Gloucestershire.

In the next edition, we will be looking more closely at the Broadmoor Hospital design. If you have been involved with the scheme as a product or service supplier, please get in touch.

We will also be looking at how virtual reality is helping architects to put themselves in the place of people with dementia in order to enhance the built environment.

Plus, we will be exploring best practice in the design of outdoor spaces for people with mental health conditions.
