News in brief Ward to be modernised
A sod-cutting ceremony marked the start of work on a £2m project to expand a dementia care ward at Witham Court in Lincolnshire. Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust has joined forces with Integrated Health Projects (IHP) to design and refurbish the ward, which cares for 20 people with dementia. As part of the work, en- suites will be added to the bedrooms. While construction, which will take around nine months, is underway patients will receive treatment at home as part of a pilot community scheme.

A dementia-friendly hospital in Swansea is helping to prompt memories among patients by opening a hair salon they can use without leaving the ward. Women who suffer from dementia and are being treated at Swansea’s Cefn Coed Hospital will now be able to pop to the hairdressers whenever they like, and then stop for a pot of tea at the Serenity tearoom. The salon is kitted out in a classic design, with old magazines dotted around. The move follows a similar innovation at the hospital where an old-fashioned pub was set up on the neighbouring all-male Derwen Ward.
