EDITOR’S NOTE Delivering the vision
Mental health remains in the spotlight, with some of the promises made during the Autumn budget now filtering through.
For example, earlier this month it was revealed that a landmark rollout of specialist perinatal community services across England means mums and mums-to-be who are experiencing anxiety, depression or other forms of mental ill health should be able to access high-quality care much closer to home, a
crucial move as hundreds of patients currently have to travel miles for care.
And a pilot is underway to improve services for people who arrive at A&E experiencing a mental health crisis, with the aim to deliver specialist care within an hour.
Recent figures released by the NHS show the current lack of psychiatric facilities cost the NHS £112m last year due to patients having to be treated outside of their local area.
This has put the focus back on the estate, and providing buildings from which to deliver modern, patient-focused care.
While the Government is also putting an emphasis on community-based services, there is inevitably a need for improvement.

In this edition of mhdf we look at some of the work already underway, and the challenge for manufacturers to create user-friendly products that will help to enhance care settings.
In the Projects section (p8), we look at how the latest door entry systems are being deployed in Northern Ireland’s Rathview Mental Health Facility; and how the modern mental health window design is helping patients and staff at a new psychiatric intensive care unit in Devon.
And windows are very much in the news currently, after it was reported that a man fell from the window of a mental health unit in Kent (p7).
The incident has led to a warning that current testing standards for window restrictors in mental health units are inadequate.
Features in this edition include mental health and dementia flooring products (p16); and a look at how robust, anti-ligature TVs are helping to enhance the environment for patients.
And there’s a focus on interior design, with details of projects in London and Shropshire (p13).
In the next edition we will be looking more closely at window restrictors, mental health fencing, wardrobes and bedroom storage solutions for psychiatric settings, and anti- ligature washroom fixtures and fittings.
