Future of the UK maritime technology industries in view of the global market trends

The global economic outlook, although debated among the experts worldwide, does not offer the clue as to what is ahead of us in the foreseeable future, not to mention medium and long range perspective.

All we know for certain is that global economy navigates turbulent waters. Therefore, as former marine navigator I am sure that we ought

to be well prepared for uncertainty and for above average risks. Those who dare to take the challenge and are equipped with vision and expertise will no doubt eventually be rewarded.

The DNV GL report “Maritime Nations of the World 2018” offers the picture of the World economy seen as the aggregated national economies of the leading maritime nations. The UK is ranked 8th on the overall list of 20 major maritime economies, however in the maritime technology industries ranking, the UK does not appear on the list of top 20.

This is the alarming piece of news especially that the report emphasizes the importance of maritime technology industries

for the overall economic growth of the country and for the size of national economy.

Unfortunately, we neither can fight global crisis nor can we beat the competition of Far East shipbuilding superpowers driven by their governments support (enormous subsidies and financing schemes).

But all hands on deck and we are bound to find solutions.

To start with, every possible effort should be taken to keep the UK shipyards in motion especially those on the verge of bankruptcy or closure. The experienced personnel, skills, know‐how and company’s culture are too valuable assets to be abandoned thus lost for decades.

At the same time the course should be set by the long term national strategy based on holistic view of the maritime technology industries and their crucial role as invaluable part of national; economy. This strategy should comprise shipyards with vast array of SME subcontractors & services providers and the broad list of industry sectors interlinked with maritime technology industries eg. oil & gas, offshore renewables, deep sea mining, shipping, aquaculture, R &D and innovation, education and advanced skills centres. This would open the way for implementation of the national Blue Growth program.
