Achievements of the Society of Maritime Industries

Once again the AGM Luncheon was held in the Little Ship Club in the City of London and members were treated to a lucid and fascinating analysis of the UK political landscape by Mr John Arnold, Public Affairs Adviser, who navigated the members through the many scenarios which could play out in the Westminster ‘village’.

Members’ Services

Members are able to enjoy the free use of the 20 seat board room in the SMI’s headquarters, which is in a prestigious location in the heart of the City of London. Whether it is meeting clients from other parts of the UK or overseas or bringing together personnel from around the UK, our facility is ideal and has been well used during the year.

Our web portal continues to be at the core of the information stream we provide for our members, who are also able to have their news releases and newsletters published on the web site thereby increasing their footprint on the internet. The team of experts within SMI are also a valuable source of information for companies wishing to explore new markets or find their way through the labyrinthine process of selling into the domestic defence business!

One of the most valuable sources of information for our members is through the contact made across all of SMI’s interest groups in the member‐only discussion meetings arranged in our boardroom. These are held with invited speakers around a particular business topic and generate opportunities for members to develop informal business collaborations. As these events are not on our open calendar they are the ‘hidden’ benefit of being a member of SMI.

Our seminar programme has covered topics such as “Ship & Project Finance”; Securing new entrants to provide ship engineering services for the Portsmouth naval base” on behalf of BAE Systems; “Supply Opportunities for the UK Maritime Industry in Australia” at Australia House and attended by the Premier of South Australia, the Honourable Steven Marshall MP; and the annual “Current trends in shipping – the emissions challenge”. Furthermore, our visits programme included the Port of Dover and the Space Applications Catapult at Harwell.

Ocean Business is in its seventh iteration of this highly acclaimed show and SMI is proud to be a partner with the organiser, Diversified Communications UK. Members exhibiting at the show are able to avail themselves of a generous discount from their stand space cost. This hands‐on exhibition and training forum has carved out a major slot in the international trade show calendar.

Special Awards

The 2019 SMI Undergraduate Award, funded by a trust fund set up in memory of Mr Donald Maxwell, the founder director‐general of SMI’s predecessor organisation, BMEC, went to Jordon Anthony Dobson who was studying for a Bachelor Degree of Engineering in Marine Technology with Honours in Marine Engineering, University of Newcastle, for his paper: “The implementation of smart grid

technology on ships for the optimisation of Cold Ironing systems”. This was presented to him by the SMI’s President at the AGM Luncheon.

The second award was presented at the gala dinner during Ocean Business, Southampton, for the Marine Science & Technology Group Business Person of the Year. This biennial award went to Claire Cardy of Nortek for her extensive training work for the sector at large and her business success since taking over as UK manager for her company.

Governance

SMI is a not‐for‐profit company limited by guarantee, with a Board of directors elected from the membership. To ensure the full interests of members are reflected, each of the market areas of interest elect their own Councils from companies within their specific sectors and the Chairs of those Councils are ex‐officio members of the Board. The Board and Councils direct policy on a wide range of issues and initiate programmes of activities designed to benefit all members. Financial decisions concerning SMI and the output of its Councils are exercised solely by the SMI’s Board. SMI strengthens its links with Parliament and the general public by appointing Honorary Vice Presidents, who are serving Members of Parliament.

SMI is managed by a Chief Executive and an executive management committee, consisting of the Council Directors and the Operations Manager, who are experts in their particular fields, and two supporting staff.

2019 saw the retirement of two SMI stalwarts, Clementina Upton, Events and Office Manager, after 20 years’ service; and Christopher McHugh who held the position of Programme Director and Director to the MDSG Council. Christopher was appointed an Honorary Member of SMI at the AGM Luncheon. We thank them both for their invaluable contribution to SMI.

Acknowledgement of Member Support

SMI relies on the active support of its members in a variety of capacities, which ensures we continue to meet the needs of the industry. Through SMI’s Board of Directors and Councils, 121 members are involved with the running of SMI and setting its policy agenda. Annual elections ensure that a broad cross section of the membership contributes to our work and provides a valuable resource for new ideas. Members are encouraged to apply for positions on our Councils and to play an active part in directing the activities of the Society.
