HOMES abroad OK! So you have
decided Spain is the country you would
like to invest in, well that’s the easy bit!
WITH ALLISON AAGAARD, THE DIRECTOR OF A UK BASED INTERNATIONAL PROPERTY AND RELOCATION CONSULTATION SERVICE. ‘A DREAM HOME IN SPAIN,’ (ADHIS)
From my own personal and professional experience, I have found there are so many reasons that inspire us Brits to invest in a property in Spain. Most of us love Spain’s warmer sunnier climate, its improved
healthier lifestyle along with the lower cost of living it can offer. However, this does not in any way dismiss the significant care and consideration you should give to this emotional and financial investment, for you and your family. Tese so called “Overarching Motivations,” can entice us to make one of the biggest decisions of our lives, to purchase an investment property, a holiday/second home or relocation/retirement home in Spain.
My advice is, that whichever of these motivations you may have, your fundamental considerations during your earliest thought processes, should become the characteristics of your personal search. I recommend that you develop a 3 stage, initial outline plan:
STAGE 1
Make an honest and realistic assessment of your present financial standing and what amount you can afford to allocate to buy a property in Spain (For the short term and the long term; your income, a mortgage, inheritance, savings……etc )We will explore the financial planning and options you have to consider in the next edition.
STAGE Where is the best
2
destination for you to buy at property in Spain? (Your motivations; future income, lifestyle choices/interests, your age, your health…. etc) We can only learn so much from the internet and speaking to advisers. Once you have established what your personal ideals are, the destination for you to invest will start to become apparent.
STAGE Which property
3
characteristics are most relevant to you and your future financial and emotional investment in Spain? Taxes and property values vary not only from region to region, but from one Town Hall to another. This is worth considering…..
“Where is the best destination for you to buy a property in Spain?”
Tere are, in principle, 17 regions to choose from, offering greatly contrasting Climates, Lifestyles & Economic standing. Terefore, it is vital that you take this into account before you make a commitment to investing in any particular destination in mainland Spain, the Balearics or the Canary Islands. Te most popular of these for us Brits are the coastal regions from the furthest north, neighbouring the South of France; Catalonia (Te Costa Brava. Costa del Maresme, Costa del Garraf and the Costa Dorada.) Heading south to Valencia, (Costa de Azahar, Costa de Valencia & the Costa Blanca.) Murcia, (Te Costa Calida.) Onto Andalucía, (Costa Almeria, Costa Tropical, Costa del Sol and the Costa De La Luz.) and then the South Atlantic Coast and Galicia in the west, neighbouring Portugal, not forgetting the south east and the lesser known northern coastal regions of Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque country. From one coastline to another, the Spanish inland regions offer an enormous and diverse landscape offering a combination of stunning, desert wildernesses, lush meadows, rolling hills, mountain ranges, draped with thousands of Vineyards, fields of Citrus fruits, olive and Almond groves, forests lakes and rivers. Tere are fascinating historical cities, towns and villages which have all been built around the enduring National industry of farming in some of the best climates in the world! Tis country possesses thousands of preserved, ancient archaeological and architectural sites, which stand as testimonies of the influences
