PARTNERSHIP SMOOTHS THE WAY FOR CARDIFF PUPILS

Children and parents no longer have to dodge potholes and puddles on their way to school in Cardiff, thanks to a community project carried out as part of a major city homes development. Te partnership behind Te Mill, a landmark development under way in Canton, have resurfaced a well-used footpath leading to local Welsh-medium primary school Ysgol Treggana. Te work to the footpath, which runs between the housing site and the school, was carried out by the site team. Homes developer Lovell, the Tirion Group and Cadwyn Housing Association – the partners behind the 800-home scheme - aim to create a legacy of benefits for the local area through the homes project which is going ahead with financial backing from the Principality Building Society and the support of the Welsh Government. Lovell community coordinator Bernadette Vickery says: “We were delighted to help out when the school asked if we could improve the footpath. Te uneven ground was causing particular difficulties for parents with pushchairs and meant there were lots of puddles when it rained. Te work has made a real difference, making it much easier to walk on and also safer for everyone.” Head teacher Rhys Harries adds: “It’s great to have practical help with simple stuff like pathway access to the school. Tanks to the team for making our drop off and pick up considerably easier and my school considerably less muddy!” A number of other community projects are planned with Ysgol Treganna, including providing a new bike shed and repairing some of the other paths in the school grounds. Pupils have also been invited to name roads leading to the new housing development. Te 800 homes under construction by Lovell at Te Mill, Canton, are bringing fresh life to the former Arjo Wiggins paper mill site. Tey include 358 homes for open market sale by Lovell and 442 homes for rent – which will be managed by Cadwyn Housing Association - for the Tirion Group who are developing the site in partnership with Lovell.
