Everyman Teatre presents Blue Stockings by Jessica Swale

Te play has received much critical acclaim since its debut in the Globe Teatre in 2013, and has further contributed

to the awareness of women’s fight for equality in Victorian Britain in other areas than seeking to be able to vote.

However, as certain colleges withheld degrees from women well into the twentieth century, and women’s education

across the globe today still oſten seen as less important, the play has far-reaching implications.

Tess, Carolyn, Maeve and Celia arrive to study at Girton College, Cambridge in 1896.

Tough just as smart as their male counterparts, they have not had formal education and are treated as unladylike and unnatural for choosing education over a “normal” life for a women of the time. In the play, as in real-life, these pioneering women are negatively referred to as “Blue Stockings”.

“I think lots of people find talking about wills uncomfortable because it’s like facing the reality that you are going to die. I was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ in 2007, and the will was put to one side because it was something that we just couldn’t face doing at the time. Thankfully I’ve recovered since then, and our family has grown. We heard about Tenovus Cancer Care’s Free Wills service and it made sense for us to use it. It’s a really easy way for us to give something back for everything we’ve received from the charity”.

As the girls go about their studies and prove themselves to be more than worthy of their awards, the college grants a vote of the Cambridge University alumni on whether or not women should be able to receive their degrees. Whilst this story of historical importance unfolds, the students struggle with their still relatable lives, and the unenviable choices the young women are faced with between their families, future and careers they might not even be permitted to have.

Tis important play, featuring love, laughter and very real lives will playfully test a modern audience. It is funny and bittersweet as well as being incredibly insightful, especially in our own era where relationships between men and women are as confusing and difficult as ever.
