A packed three days of music, arts and ideas in the birthplace of the red fl ag. Celebrated actor and political activist Michael Sheen will be offi cially opening the Merthyr Rising Festival 2018 with a talk on the main stage and will be helping to raise the red fl ag to launch the weekend’s proceedings in style. T e festival takes place during the anniversary of one of the very fi rst organised uprisings by workers in 1831 known as the Merthyr Rising. T e Merthyr Rising of 1831 was the violent climax to many years of simmering unrest among the large working class population of Merthyr Tydfi l where it is believed that for the fi rst time the red fl ag of revolution was fl own as a symbol of workers’ revolt. Today they annually celebrate this symbolic event through a cultural festival
