A social club in Barry and a community dance company are both financially better off aſter winning grants from a leading housebuilder. Barry Island Sports and Social Club and Rubicon Dance are the latest regional recipients of Persimmon Homes’ Community Champions scheme, each pocketing £1,000. Te social club will use the cash to install air conditioning, while Rubicon Dance wants to expand its dance programme for older people. Lee Jones, of the social club committee, said: “Tis is tremendous news. Te club is the heart of the community but it’s a real struggle to stay open in today’s climate. “We desperately need to install air conditioning in our function room to keep the community coming back. “Tis money will go a long way to helping us achieve that.” Lauren Williams, of Rubicon Dance,


said: “We


work throughout Cardiff, Newport and Te Vale of Glamorgan and we currently have Wales’ largest elderly dance programme, as well as an extensive dance and disability programme. “Tis programme helps provide social inclusion for members of society who feel socially isolated. Without funding, this would not be possible. “We are delighted to receive this support from Persimmon.”


Each month Persimmon Homes donates up to £2,000 to community groups in each of its 31 geographical operating areas. Tis means up to £62,000 is dished out every single month – a total of £744,000 a year, and more than £2million since the scheme started back in 2015. Coed y Gof - a Welsh medium school in Pentrebane – helping to renovate recreational areas much in need of repair. Te graduates from various Redrow divisions across the UK - along with special guest, ex-Welsh professional rugby player Alix Popham – were delighted to show the excited pupils exactly what had been achieved as they officially handed over the new areas. working on five zones within their redevelopment plans which included new rubber bound bark chipping, blackboard walls and Wendy houses, as well as literacy, numeracy and sports corners. Zone five undertook the biggest change, being transformed into a new sensory garden for the pupils comprising of a sensory path, log seating, and herb garden. Closely located to Redrow’s Cae St Fagans development at Plasdŵr, a lack of funding has seen the school’s external areas sadly neglected but it was Redrow to the rescue! Te team of 20, along with the help of staff and much appreciated donations from Redrow contractors and suppliers - including Ginkgo, Gwent Gardens, Bell’s, Parker’s, Jewsons, Rexel, Dulux, DAS Outdoors, Speedy Hire, Lex Autolease, Golley Slater, Office Supplies and Accenture – made sure work was
