U18 Cardiff Blues player named best fitness trainer in UK at WorldSkills final B &


Anthony Cox, a member of the U18 Cardiff Blues team, was awarded a gold medal at the WorldSkills UK fi nal after battling it out against competitors from England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.


The young rugby player joined more than 90 learners, apprentices and employees from across the country representing Wales at the national fi nals of the WorldSkills UK competitions and he may go on to compete on a world stage.

Anthony, 17, from Fairwater who is studying for a vocational access course as a fi tness trainer, was one of the competitors to win a medal in the fi tness trainer category. “I really enjoyed the Skills Show and I felt ready to put myself to the test. I’d been preparing with my coach for days beforehand and I was ready to prove my skills at the competition. “We were each tasked with inducting a client

demonstrating to them how to correctly use equipment, warm up exercises and safely carry out a double bench press.


WorldSkills is a series of competitions designed to celebrate the achievements of young people in a variety of skillsets, from live music performances and fi tness training, to childcare and vehicle refi nishing. The UK fi nal takes place each year at The Skills Show, and this year saw more than 460 competitors from across Great Britain compete to win medals for their country, be named the best at their skill, and have the chance to represent the UK at the

I managed to complete all 12 tasks which no other competitor did, which I think was one of the reasons I won the gold medal. “Winning gold and being named the best in the UK has made me realise if I put my mind to something and work hard, I can achieve amazing things.” Team Wales won a total of 5 gold, 19 silver, 16 bronze and 8 medallions of excellence at the WorldSkills UK fi nal, which took place at the Skills


Show at Birmingham’s NEC from 16 to 18 November.


Eluned Morgan, Minister for Welsh Language and Lifelong Learning also attended this year’s Skills Show. Commenting on Team Wales’ success, she said: “This is the fi rst time I have attended the Skills Show, and witnessed the outstanding talents of young people from across Wales. “Every year, Wales brings more competitors to the Skills Show fi nal, demonstrating the wide variety of talent from across the nation. “To have reached this stage of the competition is an achievement in itself for these young people, but to have come home with 48 medals to

Fifty aspiring young entrepreneurs from across south Wales spent the weekend (24-26 November) at an intensive three day residential Bootcamp event designed to equip them with essential skills to make their business dreams a reality. Big Ideas Wales’ ‘Bootcamp to Business’ event at Margam Discovery Centre, Port Talbot, was open to motivated and business minded young people aged between 18-25, all of whom went through an interview process before being awarded a position at the sought after residential Bootcamp.


The bi-annual three-day event features a series of business workshops dedicated to expanding the knowledge of the young entrepreneurs, growing their network of connections and ultimately helping them to launch their business. The fi fty-strong cohort who successfully earned their place at Bootcamp spent the weekend meeting established Welsh businesspeople and talent from all walks of life, including the co-founder of Catalyst Growth Partners and one of Wales’

and hopefully growing their own successful business.” Since attending Bootcamp earlier this year, Maciek and Karina of Get Wonky have gone on to supply their products to over 40 venues across Wales, as well as establishing a relationship with one of the UKs largest catering fi rms, the Compass Group. The pair have also been recognised for the impressive strides they have made as young businesspeople, picking up ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ at the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards at a ceremony earlier this month. Two Bootcamp attendees were awarded prizes for their efforts at the three- day event, including Bethan McNally, 20, from Cardiff who was awarded ‘Most Improved Bootcamper’ for her theatre company supporting those with mental health problems. Also honoured at Bootcamp was Siwan Reynolds, 24, from Cardiff who was named ‘Most engaged Bootcamper’, nominated by her peers. Siwan, whose business Cardiff Meditation offers meditation to businesses and schools, said: “As I am in the process of establishing my business, the Bootcamp to Business event has been a great way of gaining more information on how to develop the idea further and gain advice from likeminded businesspeople. And to win one of the Bootcamp awards topped off the whole weekend!” Big Ideas Wales is part of the Business Wales service to encourage youth entrepreneurship in Wales. Funded by Welsh Government and the European Regional Development Fund it helps young people aged between 5 and 25 to develop business ideas and entrepreneurial talent.
