ARIES (March 21st to April 19th) Don’t get smug. You have the odd touch of genius about you, interspersed with more than a little silliness. At this moment in time you really need to be all genius, so calm down, sort yourself out and see just how clever you really can be, after all it is in your own interests. Lately you have been getting very annoyed about a job you have had done. Nothing seems to be right. Don’t brood, be prepared to close your eyes to imperfections occasionally.

TAURUS (April 20th to May 20th) What you want is a good tonic. Could be a visit to the doctor would be a good idea? Have a check up and follow advice. Maybe you need a complete change or rest, or perhaps all you need is a short break from family and routine? Whatever is suggested, get on and make arrangements. One of your recent plans has gone wrong. You may not know this yet but it is as well to be prepared.

GEMINI (May 21st to June 21st) Take comfort from the fact that if you feel bad after this row, so will the other party. Really the whole thing is extremely silly and unnecessary but like many seemingly unimportant things there is a danger of it being blown up out of all proportion. Take your pride in your hand and make peace. It may not be totally down to you but, well, so what? Why not plan a surprise trip or a meal out? You can really turn on the charm if you want to.

The Gift from the Garden

Your garden gives up some beautiful gifts of its own at this time of year - allowing you to bring the outside into the home with foliage and ‘green’ decorations. By using your garden as a resource you can create some simple, yet beautiful decorative displays for the Christmas festivities. A great use for your winter prunings is to arrange bare or lichen- covered twigs in a tall glass vase and festoon with tea light holders or use lengths of trailing ivy and evergreen foliage twisted into swags for looping along mantelpieces or winding round banisters. Sprigs of aromatic leaves and herbs – bay, rosemary, sage, thyme and anything else you can lay your hands on – arranged around a large candle on a deep fluted dish to make a fragrant table centre piece. If you can’t source your Christmas greenery from your own garden that take a trip down to your local garden centre where you’ll find just about everything you need. Small living Christmas trees can be bought in pots for children - so that each year they can be brought inside for the festivities and be part of your Christmas tradition. Alternatively, you can buy a larger living tree and when Christmas is over plant it in a good position in the garden allowing for future growth. In the depths of winter, the quiet charms of plants with strikingly coloured bark come into their own. Textures and stem colours of trees and shrubs attract the eye and brighten the winter gloom. By planting, for example, dogwoods, snake bark maples, willows and white washed brambles, you can create a stunning winter effect in any garden or landscape. Most winter stems are best planted in groups to maximise their impact and in locations where they can be seen and appreciated. They perform well in full sun and in deep, moist, loamy soil so try to avoid shallow and chalky soils. Dogwood and willow shrubs will need pruning each year in March, almost to ground level, to ensure that a fresh crop of the brightest coloured stems are produced in the next winter.

December is definitely a time to catch up on some indoor gardening jobs and have a rest, but for those that are out and about you could: • Carry on harvesting winter crops such as parsnips, kale, leeks, sprouts (don’t forget to pick sprouts from the bottom of the stalk upwards)

• Collect all empty plant pots and seed trays together and wash them ready for next year together with garden tools

• Collect the rest of the leaves that have fallen from the trees for composting as leaf mould • Do some early wrapping by covering any large outside containers with bubblewrap, fleece or hessian, to help prevent the pots cracking in the cold frosty weather

• Don’t be too much of a tidy gardener - leave some seed heads and berries on plants for animals and birds to eat

• Provide clean water for wildlife to drink 24 - Friday 8th December 2017 – Cardiff & South Wales Advertiser

CANCER (June 22nd to July 22nd) Feel secure in the knowledge that any decisions you make this week will probably be good ones. This may be some comfort to you since recently your self-confi dence has received something of a knock. Don’t take too much notice of things said in anger by the one with whom you share your life. Understanding and love will sort out the problems. Take a share of the blame if something gets lost over the next two weeks, but guess who will fi nd it?

LEO (July 23rd to August 22nd)

Finding the truth out about ourselves is something none of us savour. Every now and again though, it is a necessary exercise. Try to look objectively at what you learn about yourself, both from your own observations and those of others. Be prepared also to suspect that those close to you may be somewhat prejudiced, as of course you may be also. Deep inside, you will know the truth, so be prepared to accept, and remedy!

VIRGO (August 23rd to September 22nd) Fall in with the plans of your family if you can. Don’t make too many objections if what they have in mind does not altogether suit you. There are times when others know what is best for you and this is one of them. You are scheduled to meet a fascinating new personality. This could either be the start of a big change in your life or just a pleasant interlude. It all depends on the mood you are in when the meeting occurs.

LIBRA (September 23rd to October 23rd)

A certain amount of strain is causing you to be a little unfair to a close friend. Don’t push your luck, or their goodwill, too far. Something will give under the strain and you will be the only loser. Finding your feet in a new environment is not a problem to you normally. These are not normal times however and you are going to feel unusually uneasy. Take your time, you will relax eventually, with a little help from your friends.

SCORPIO (October 24th to November 22nd) Take your time with decisions and don’t jump the gun with preparations connected to a happy event. This may be a surprise to you in that more may occur than you expect. Never mind, the more the merrier. Feeling your way in a new relationship is always diffi cult and this one is no exception. You will however fi nd the whole situation a refreshing challenge so just relax, consolidate yourself, and enjoy!

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd to December 21st) You really will have to curb your temper. All this unthinking anger will do no-one any good, you especially. Just sit down, count to ten, take a deep breath and think before you speak. Go on a journey if you get the opportunity. There is something good at the end of it if you look hard enough. One or two things are said by a friend that irritate you. Before you fl y off the handle, think if one at least, may not be, in part at least, true?

CAPRICORN (December 22nd to January 20th) Fortune is about to smile on you. It may not be in quite the way you expect, however anything good is acceptable so don’t turn your nose up at any off ers. This week and the next are in any case governed by the unexpected and you must be prepared to take full advantage of everything that comes your way, from whatever quarter. Bow to the inevitable and take your chances with the rest of the chancers in your group, but don’t annoy them.

AQUARIUS (January 21st to February 19th) A busy coming fortnight with lots of variety both in the leisure and business fi eld. Take your time deciding on a project for your own participation over the next few weeks. If you take the time and trouble to sort things out properly you will reap benefi ts both from the points of view of personal satisfaction and, more importantly, from a fi nancial stand point. Your fi nances are starting to look a little better but that’s not a signal to go on a spending spree!

PISCES (February 20th to March 20th) Four or fi ve things come to mind that must be seen to over the next couple of weeks. Do not be put off by opposition from the family who can think of better things to do. Follow your own inclinations and you will not regret your actions. Come to terms with a small health problem, when you are off ered treatment, take advice and follow it implicitly. Form your own opinion regarding an event in the neighbourhood that is causing controversy.
