Thousands of logistics fi rms reach the end of the road
Closures rise by 75% amongst both logistics and courier companies

New industry fi gures from the Offi ce for National Statistics (ONS) show a huge rise in logistics company closures. In all, 15,005 freight transport businesses failed in the fi rst quarter of 2022 (January to March), compared to 8,590 in the same period last year.
The closures show the sector is being forced
to respond to changes in demand, following the end of Covid lockdowns. Lockdown restrictions forced people into sending their gifts rather than deliver them in person. At the same time, the closure of all non-essential stores created a boom in home
deliveries. The market is now readjusting as friends and families reunite and shoppers fl ock back to the High Street. It is signifi cant that this new ONS Business
