Maxi Dolphin MD75 After an interlude in the world of motor yachts, Maxi Dolphin returns to sailing with Karma, the first of a new model – the new MD75 designed by Mark Mills. Owned since 2016 by MD Technologies, Maxi Dolphin has been building high-end sailing yachts for more than 30 years, the last being the Finot-Conq 100-footer Nomad. Now Karmamarks the debut of a new collaboration with Mark Mills and Nauta Yachts Design, placed in charge of interior design. Karma has been created for a passionate windsurfer, kiter and
kite-foiler, but his request for his very first boat was for a simple, easy to sail, fast but at the same time comfortable and pleasant yacht suitable for a family sometimes living onboard. Based on the owner’s requirements, Mark Mills developed this new 75-footer working closely with the client’s experienced project manager Lorenzo Loik, whose main drive was to keep everything as light as possible… bearing in mind his client’s love for speed on the water. The hull lines are clearly inspired by Mills’ maxi racers, but Karma
has a much simpler 32m rig designed by Chris Mitchell without any backstays but still supporting a powerful sailplan with a generous square-top mainsail. The boat also features strikingly low freeboards, twin rudders, a lifting keel and a sleek nearly-flush deck layout, with halyards and control lines all running underdeck to winches set just ahead of the wheels, thus freeing up maximum uninterrupted space for the guests. The main structure is built entirely of carbon over CoreCell foam
all cured to 60°C. Interior panels are also sandwich –the finished hull and deck structure came out of the moulds at just 26 tonnes. The build was carried out by Maxi Dolphin, who also designed in-house all the systems except for the hydraulic lifting-keel system by Cariboni. A large staircase connects the central cockpit to the living area below deck, where Nauta have produced an impressive interior

The interior has a warm atmosphere but deviates from the current trend for minimalism, with generous use of open- pore oak with an unusual distressed finish that suggests more beachside restaurant than boutique hotel. Back on deck there is a large garage accessible via a flush hatch
behind the steering wheels that can hold a modest 4m tender, launched and recovered easily via a large transom opening. The first MD75 Karma has a lifting keel but a fixed-keel version
