The BR31 evolved from our desire to make high-performance racing more accessible. It’s long been clear that there are always lengthy delays while the technology and performance seen in high-end racing trickles down to mainstream classes. The aim with the BR31 was to short-cut the process to produce a high-end, affordable racer to compete under IRC or ORC – in DLR segregated divisions. In the UK we have watched the recent explosion of the Fast 40+


class which has begun to bridge the gap. However, at around £600,000 plus running costs this level of racing is out of the reach of all but a tiny handful of good sailors. We believe an affordable, yet uncompromising low-DLR high-performance carbon racer around the £115k mark is a valuable addition to the European race market. The HP30 concept offers a framework for racing affordable fast


yachts – potentially tagging onto the elite Fast40+ programme. To us it is not unfathomable to imagine the beginnings of a return to the type of racing previously seen in the 1980s and 90s on IOR Quarter and Half Tonners and the like. Since those heady days IRC has been successful in maintaining competitive racing between production and custom yachts; however, there is a growing constituency wanting to go much faster but still with good racing. HP30 may be one solution. The creation of the BR31 involved a lot of time spent on


performance development using our own hull design and VPP software in conjunction with a full RANS CFD study. Our benchmark classes include the Farr 280, C&C30 and the more recent Cape 31.
