Busman’s holiday With the America’s Cup over and the prospect of a more promising season this year, many Cup sailors will be looking at the superyacht programme to help pay the school fees. Other major series also look good, with a delayed but healthy TP52 Super Series and the Maxi fleets equally determined to make a success of 2021. The UK is fortunate to currently be enjoying the easing of restrictions, the result being a storm of racing activity which will soon hopefully be reflected elsewhere. With no new Maxi racers or TP52s launching, a lot of design focus is on a steady stream of new superyachts hitting the water – including a very ‘desirable’ Baltic 146-footer to follow their spectacular DSS 142ft Canova which we will see a lot more of this year. With ‘small’ yacht development presently focused around the Imoca, Class40 and IRC fleets, there is plenty of meaty technological development continuing in the superyacht classes with some ever more fascinating and efficient sailing systems. Making life even more interesting is that, with IRC and ORC taking steps to encourage smaller crews on the biggest yachts, while this is obviously less favourable for the same pro sailors, it will speed up the drive towards more and better automation to help sail these powerful sailboats both faster and more easily. And on that subject… after years of trying, the AC75s gave us a practical, reefable wing sail, generating huge power but still capable of being dropped on a halyard (or two). There’s something for ambitious superyacht designers to ponder on over a glass or two of Cristal at the next launch
