In each episode action starts with the 24-hour challenge, over about 400nm (departure on Thursday for arrival on Friday), followed by eight inshore legs over two days, on Saturday and Sunday. The series final will be an offshore race between the Mediterranean and Atlantic sailed in early August. After which the series will be completed and the winner declared! Upswing Prod’s aim with the series, called Ocean Fifty, is to reach a new audience and bring to life this competition by tracking on film the daily lives of the men and women who live off their passion for their sport and the oceans. The sailors will be presented as both inspirational professional athletes and passionate defenders of the environment.

The 2021 programme for the annual Pro Sailing Tour will take a three-month format: Brest and La Rochelle in May, Las Palmas/ Gran Canaria at the end of June/early July, and Marseille later in July along with the final offshore race, starting from a Mediterranean port on the weekend of 1 August and arriving in Brest seven days later. ‘Six boats are already interested, including two new trimarans (Arkema 4 and Planet Warrior, skippered respectively by Quentin Vlamynck and Fabrice Cahierc). But we could have a seventh (the previous Arkema of Lalou Roucayrol for sale or charter), and even an eighth or ninth next year,’ said class president Erwan Le Roux.

Damien Guillou all set for the Golden Globe Technical assistant with the Imoca PRB, the yacht lost during the last Vendée Globe, Damien Guillou will carry the colours of the famous company of Vendée in 2022 during the Golden Globe Race, a round-the-world launched in 2018 in the wake of the 1968 iconic contest around the planet won by Robin Knox-Johnston. Damien Guillou, 38, was a top dinghy racer who became one of the top experts of the Figaro Bénéteau. He did not say yes right away when PRB President Jean-Jacques Laurent told him he was looking for a successor to Philippe Péché, who had to retire from the first edition of the GGR in 2018/2019 (won by Jean-Luc Van den Heede, at the age of 73 after 212 days at sea). ‘When Jean-Jacques told me about his idea we were in the last phases of preparing the Imoca for the VG (PRB is going to build a new Imoca from an existing mould) so I didn’t really react, even though, of course, the proposal excited me. I took time to learn about the race and the idea gradually grew. After talking to my wife and Paul Meilhat and Anthony Marchand, two childhood friends who know me well, I returned to Jean-Jacques Laurent to inform him that I very much wanted to embark on this project!’ Damien’s boat will be a Rustler 36, the same production boat that was used by Philippe Pêché and Jean-Luc Van Den Heede. ‘As soon as we receive the boat from Italy she will go into the yard for a total refit. At the moment she is in cruising configuration and putting her in race mode will require big changes. We are planning a relaunch at the end of June so I can sail all summer then start my 2,000nm qualifier at the beginning of September.’

The Ultim Vaz

‘With the purchase of M100at the top level our goals are of course revised upwards. It’s truly exciting. Now I have a machine to win,’ declared a happy Yves Le Blévec.
