Some years ago we designed a modern Class 950 race yacht that was aimed at those wanting to race offshore and inshore shorthanded against other similar yachts. We did sign up a client in Italy and another in the UK but overall the class never really took off. Last year, we had a past client approach us to design a similar


concept to the 950, but more solo orientated. We have a large group of sailors in NZ and Australia dedicated to this type of sailing and a full 2021 domestic programme lined up as well as some larger events including the 2022 Solo Tasman Challenge, the 2023 Round North Island Race and the 2025 Round New Zealand race. Our new design is a 30-foot canting-keel offshore racing yacht


specifically designed for this type of racing. Twin rudders and twin daggerboards complete the appendage package to balance a powerful square-top sail plan and ensure good pace upwind as well as down. A fixed prod to handle the Code Zero (also incorporating a protruding prod for a gennaker) will allow the yacht to fit into a 10m berth which was a key requirement in the design brief. A cableless furling staysail completes the versatile headsail configurations. All sailing and appendage controls are done from the cockpit with


a central pod next to the main bulkhead allowing all halyards and control lines to be handled either side of the port and starboard com- panionways. This area has excellent cockpit shelter provided by the extension of the main cabin top. Good cockpit cover is essential on longer races ensuring comfort and protection from the elements which in turn promotes increased performance... and enjoyment! Down below we have a central galley that can be worked from


either side. Forward of the galley is a generous navstation with a gimballed seat that can be locked at various angles. This seat can also be extended outboard to form a single athwartship berth when needed. Forward of the navstation is a watertight bulkhead. Aft of the companionways are two oversized berths which will also

be used for stacking. Outboard and to either side are comfortable pipe-berths with gear storage underneath. All internal weights are centralised and with the interior partitioned


down the middle, outboard gear management is easy. A diesel saildrive beneath the cockpit allows good speed with enough fuel reserve as required under the various race rules. Currently we are also reviewing a hinged-prop drivetrain set-up that can be fully retracted to further reduce drag.
