Dynasty? That’s what they are talking of at Team New Zealand should they defend the Cup in March. And why not… There were some rare signs of nerves on display on Te Rehuti during the World Series in December, but in their existing configurations none of their rivals ever consistently matched the Kiwis’ straightline speed. And the other big prize… the Concours d’Elégance – after a strong early bid by Prada Luna Rossa, when the New Zealand raceboat appeared, with its combination of such an intense yet sleek focus on minimising the aero-drag, hull lines to die for and an immaculately executed colour scheme that screams winner from top to bottom, the result became a foregone conclusion. Interestingly, seen from above, the second Kiwi boat bears some external similarities to Sir Ben Ainslie’s first AC75 – significantly in the ordering of the deck with its convex central section (adding free mainsail area and possibly even a little downforce and thus righting moment) and with crew kept out of the airflow. There are also the same mirrored ‘work stations’ on the first UK yacht, with the crew split into two teams on each side of the boat – as the sailors got to grips with the AC75 the rotation between port and starboard personnel on all the boats steadily reduced and is now close to zero. But while other teams did hide their sailors more in their second boats, Team New Zealand has a history of backing themselves and typically went much further, their sailors buried deep in three pairs of foxholes and invisible from off the boat. Except for Pete Burling… he enjoys special privileges
