Custom designs Nice timing
With proven offerings from a variety of yards, the IRC racing market around the 30-35ft range had been quiet for a while… And then along came Structures Shipyard with their new Pogo RC
Few would argue that Lan Ael 3, designed by Sam Manuard and Bernard Nivelt, was the best new IRC design of 2023. Rarely beaten in IRC, even though she was only ever raced two-handed, this pretty blue design seemed to take the best of the scow philosophy and blend it seamlessly with proven IRC design practice. Typically rating at the top of her class, she nevertheless had ample speed to win the start then sail away over the horizon and save her time. Manuard provided the powerful scow-influenced hull concept while
IRC master Nivelt ensured they produced a boat that was not only very fast through the water but also very fast for its IRC rating. They did their jobs well. This successful design partnership has now been commissioned
by Pogo Structures to help them launch a slightly smaller disruptor but still in the same 30-35ft IRC design space. Pogo of course need little introduction in these pages as builders of fast and reliable boats, racers and racer-cruisers… the exceptionally strong resale values of the yachts built at the Bouroullec family’s Brittany yard is a powerful testament to build quality and consistency. Their latest IRC special is certain to shake up this sector of the
market, especially perhaps for one of the IRC market leaders, JPK, who have not launched a new model into this space for several years. The JPK response – if it comes – can be expected to impress but Pogo are already well over a year ahead of them. This new 33ft ‘Mini Class40’ is built, as is every new Pogo these
days, using the yard’s proprietary infusion system, taking full advantage of the best ‘mid-tech’ materials to deliver a yacht that is both fully competitive but also accessible at a realistic price. Sail area is generous, expected with such a powerful hull form,
with a rig oriented equally towards shorthanded and crewed competition. For example, the runners are configured so that when

sailing two-handed with one reef in the big square-top mainsail they can be left unattended for tacking or gybing. The large cockpit is also carefully thought out for both shorthanded
and crewed racing, with all the winches and locks in the right places to be close at hand when you are alone on deck. The Pogo RC features twin-rudders as standard for optimal control in heavy air and power reaching, as well as to minimise current-drain on the autopilot. The IRC TCC of the latest Pogo is estimated at 1.06. By contrast
in 2023 the slightly larger 35ft Lan Ael 3 rated 1.082. The base price of the Pogo RC with aluminium spars is expected
to start at around 145,000 euros. Fully equipped to top grand prix standard, with carbon spars, a top-of-the-range sail wardrobe, a full offshore electronics and routeing pack and tax, expect that number to increase to 300,000-350,000 euros. As we now expect with any new Pogo the RCs are already flying
off the shelf; remember that delivery times for previous Pogo racing and dual-purpose designs have often run to two or three years. So if you are seriously interested the Seahorse tip of the month
is pick up the phone… quickly. Marie La Guerche, Nantes

Figaristes love them. Quick (especially VMG). 13 spoken for. Still cracking value A sailor’s yacht. Cold-moulded Douglas fir/Western red cedar.
