Dan Houston surely knows more about classic yacht racing and the boats that take part than Bill Gates knows about software…

The latest Pan Am Games offered a rare glimmer of light for US Olympic sailing as Ian Barrows (Yale) and Hans Henken (Stanford) took the series in the 49er. Elsewhere eyes in the class are on the rise and rise of Marco Grael (yes, he is) and Gabriel Silva, fourth in Santiago. Do not rule out an all-Grael top step at Paris; Martine Grael already has two 49erFX golds
stole the show, receiving a rousing standing ovation for standing by the sinking Vari in rough conditions shortly after the start of the 2023 Fastnet Race. The Rolex Sydney Hobart Race kept many of us entertained
over Christmas. After 600-miles the battle for line honours came down to a thrilling light-air match race between LawCon- nect and Andoo Comanche, each exploiting the racing rules to gift the other 100-foot-grade dirty air. Congratulations to Law- Connect, also to the overall winner on IRC the Tasmanian entry Alive. And to all who finished another challenging race south. We recently announced exciting plans for RORC’s Griffin
youth initiative, under its new chair Jim Driver (better known as father of Ellie!). In 2024 RORC members aged between 18 and 30 will have the opportunity to train in a fleet of four identical new Sunfast 30 ODs provided by Foad Zahedi’s Cap Regatta, before running their own three-race campaigns. Over 200 young sailors have registered their interest, and four of the UK’s best ocean sailors – Dee Caffari, Steve Hayles, Shirley Robertson and Ian Walker – have generously volunteered their time as coaches. What a fantastic opportunity.

ince word got out that I would become the next Commodore of the RORC I have been touched by the many messages of support. Thank you for placing your trust in me, it is a huge honour. It is also an exciting time to take the helm, with our Cowes clubhouse currently undergoing a major redevel-
opment, plans taking shape to celebrate the club’s centenary in 2025 and of course the relaunch of the Admiral’s Cup. Ensuring the success of the Admiral’s Cup is high on my list
of priorities, and I’m delighted that former RORC Admiral Andrew McIrvine has agreed to chair an international advisory board. The event minisite is now live and we already have expressions of interest from all the nations that have previously won the Cup, as well as from Austria, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Sweden and Trinidad and Tobago. Winter is a time to reflect on the season past and look
forward to the season to come. Our annual dinner and prize- giving was a splendid evening. Outgoing Vice Commodore Eric de Turckheim’s Teasing Machine was awarded Yacht of the Year, while Rob Craigie and I were delighted to collect the Jazz Trophy for season’s points. However, it was the winners of the seamanship award, Dr Peter Rowe and the crew of Ju Kyu, who
