New Boats Table On its feet at last
The VPLP-designed Offshore 30 sponsored by RORC and UNCL seems to have been going round in circles for a while. Now with a strong build partnership agreed she’s finally on her way
This project for a 30ft one-design offshore racer was originally imagined by UNCL, the RORC and the Storm Trysail Club. For the project to succeed price would be critical since the point of the new class was to encourage young sailors into ocean racing – through private ownership or preferably at sailing clubs and schools who would be incentivised to buy several boats at a time. After a complex design contest VPLP were awarded the project,
though a price target of ⇔100,000 made it certain that finding a suitable builder was going to be a much more difficult task. Originally appointed as ‘delivery partner’, Multiplast explored
many different ways to supply the boat themselves at the target price. But try as they might, the Vannes-based operation struggled to find a solution, be it in eastern Europe, Asia or other low-cost economies. Always there were issues of quality, local skills, labour or material costs, or in ensuring reliable delivery into Europe. And so the recent tie-up with Jeanneau is happy news for French boatbuilders, with the now Sun Fast 30 to be built close to where the story began with early talks in Les Sables d’Olonne. Jeanneau will now use their massive production resources to
deliver the package at a good price, while Multiplast bring their specialist technical skills to ensure a seaworthy, well-equipped and accessible boat with easy maintenance and good one-design controls. Multiplast will also manage the sales programme, with the emphasis on clubs, sailing schools and other organisations who they hope will pick up on a modern well-priced production off- shore racer with potentially good resale values. The new Sun Fast 30 has grown closer in look to its successful bigger sisters in the Sun Fast range while the introduction of industry giant Jeanneau for the build brings precious credibility
of Elium resin, a thermoplastic resin manufactured by Arkema which constitutes 20% recycled material and is itself recyclable. The Sun Fast 30 One Design is claimed to be the world’s first pro- duction-built recyclable sailboat. However, the road to this point has not been easy – the final build process is the result of more than three years’ research within the Bénéteau Group (owners of Jeanneau) working closely with Arkema to develop an Elium varia- tion that is genuinely compatible with longterm marine use. To complete the green package two engines are offered for the
Sun Fast 30, a traditional diesel and a compact electric alternative. Better still, as both installations weigh the same there are no impli- cations for the one-design status. Twenty-six boats had been sold by mid-November with the first examples afloat this spring.
