34 The next decade When is it ever the right time to change something that’s already going so well? ROB WEILAND
A bit special We held back on using this extraordinary image from Daniel Forster as something with which to usher in a bright new year… well, in terms of publishing dates anyway. New York Yacht Club Race Week is the setting, an event that is steadily attracting more international support as well of course as the strong home entry. By dovetailing together its series of well established ‘heritage’ events the NYYC has assembled its own attractive month of big boat racing, which makes a logical follow-on for those who have competed in the Caribbean winter circuit and are not shipping directly back to Europe. Meanwhile, down south in Pensacola, Florida Terry Hutchinson and American Magic are getting in a lot more full scale AC75 testing than any of their rival 2024 America’s Cup teams as they work hard to defend the club’s honour. As the NYYC entry for the second Cup in succession there is a lot of US east coast ‘weight’ sitting on the shoulders of Hutchinson’s team. And for American Magic’s design team, finding a reliable baseline must have been unusually difficult: the team’s previous Botín-led design Patriot was the only AC75 to beat Team NZ in the early rounds and was comfortably leading Luna Rossa in the challenger final when she blew up. She was widely considered one of the best designs in Auckland, even though she was also the most standout design in comparison with the rest. So a good AC75 solution or flattered by the opposition? No one outside the team will know until the next US AC75 launches next year

77 Spot on! How to build yourself an AC40…
It seems no time since the Class40 hit boat no150 in 2017, since when numbers have exploded with no192 expected before year end. Not surprising that, with proven name builders behind them, demand is still growing for the fastest series built boats like this Verdier Pogo 40S4 – skippered by Xavier Macaire. After winning the 2022 Drheam Cup, Macaire was lying 2nd in the Rhum before slowing up with sail damage
