We had excellent racing in 2017, the 13th full season of IRC racing in the USA, mostly centred in the north-east and topped by New York Yacht Club and Storm Trysail Club events. New for 2017, the Storm Trysail Club hosted the IRC North American Championship at Block Island Race Week.
The USA IRC fleet comprises primarily larger boats, with 95% of the fleet having a Hull Length of 10.66m (35ft) or more, and 71% in the 10.00 to 14.99m range (32.8ft to 49.2ft). The fleet ranges from the 100ft Comanche and Rambler 88, which regularly feature in the global yachting press, to 30ft sportsboats, with production cruiser/racers and classics in the mix. A notable victory last year was that of the 1983 vintage 12-metre Defender, which was IRC winner in the New York YC’s Queen’s Cup.
All regattas and events in the US now accept Standard as well as Endorsed certificates. This has encouraged more yachtsmen to join the IRC fleet by removing the initial barrier of measurement. Still 75% of the fleet continues to hold an Endorsed certificate, either because it is required for an event or simply because they like to have full confidence in the rated data.
The US IRC fleet is predominantly focused in the north-east of the country, with more than 85% of the boats located between New England and Chesapeake Bay. The popular biennial Annapolis-Newport and Marblehead-Halifax races, along with Long Island Sound events, including Block Island Race, Vineyard Race and the Long Island Sound Championship, rounded out the 2017 season.
Some of the US IRC fleet also race overseas in events such as the Rolex Fastnet Race and Cowes Week. Perhaps the furthest travelled was Dorade, the US-owned S&S classic, which headed to Australia to compete in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
One benefit of IRC rating is that it is also a passport for entry into so many events around the world for those who like to travel.
