The IRC measurement system was introduced (as CHS) in Turkey following the demise of IOR in 1994. IRC has therefore been adopted by yacht clubs throughout Turkey and all races are now run according to the IRC Rule.
Both inshore and offshore racing have been popular in Turkey and many yachting events take place around the Turkish coast, which stretches more than 4,500 nautical miles. The most popular of our regattas, by numbers of participants, are the Marmaris International Race Week (organised by Marmaris International Yacht Club) with more than 200 participants, followed by the Bodrum Offshore Sailing Club Winter Regatta and Goçek Yacht Club Spring and Autumn Sailing Weeks. In total some 500 yachts take part in these events.
The Turkish Navy Cup, equivalent to the former Admiral’s Cup in the United Kingdom, was raced for the 46th time in 2017.
The various yacht clubs and the average number of IRC rated boats participating are as follows:
• Goçek Yacht Club: 3 races, 75 yachts on average
• Marmaris International Yacht Club: 29 races, 35 yachts (Marmaris International Race Week attracts more than 200 additional yachts)
• Bodrum Offshore Sailing Club: 30 races, 45 yachts • Aegean Offshore Yacht Club: 30 races, 35 yachts • Istanbul Sailing Club: 10 races, 45 yachts • Marmara Sailing Club: 4 races, 45 yachts • Kalamış Sailing Club: 12 races, 40 yachts • Bursa Sailing Club: 10 races, 25 yachts • Turkish Offshore Racing Club: 41 races, 50 yachts
Here in Turkey, we are of the opinion that these yacht races, which are open to yachtsmen from all over the world, will strengthen the friendship between countries.
