Pogo Structures went to some lengths to convince us that, even if it exists, a Pogo Mini foiler is a development concept and nothing would appear until the end of 2019 at least
In fact, a brand new Guillaume Verdier-designed Mini 6.50 Pogo foiler will be sailing by mid-April. The (surprise) programme for the boat is that it will be tested in good time to qualify for the Mini Transat this September. There she will compete with the fast- expanding scow contingency as well as a small number of rival Mini-foilers. Plus of course 70 or so ‘conventional’ designs. Christian Bouroullec is the founder of Pogo Structures and with
a little love he opened up for his good friend Patrice Carpentier: ‘As you know we have a great history in the Mini Class with Series and Proto designs. The Pogo 3 is our latest Series boat and it has been very successful; in 2016 this boat actually won every race in the Mini Class in the Series division. In total we have now built over 300 Minis of different types! ‘The new Pogo Foiler is designed by Guillaume Verdier, who is
also the designer of our successful Series Pogo 3. But Pogo Foiler is a very special boat and completely different from the Pogo 3. For a start the first boat is being constructed entirely in carbon because with the weight of the foils – which must be very strong – there was no possibility of using normal glass and resin systems without making the boat much too heavy. ‘The story of this boat is now becoming not so secret, but to be
honest we will still be extremely careful before considering putting this design onto the market. We know that foilers can go fast but none of the two existing Mini foilers have won any races! ‘Our only purpose is to produce a winning boat as we do with
the Pogo 3, which is still the boat to beat in the Series Mini category… although the scows will give us a fight this year. ‘Verdier has actually been working hard on this project since the Mini 6.50 rule for Protos was changed last winter, to accept much

Most had expected Pogo Structures to be working on a scow but few had anticipated that it would be featuring foils from the start. Expect Guillaume Verdier to deliver something fast and reliable
wider boats than we were allowed before.’ (Actually, the new rule says that your boat can now be 6.50m wide when sailing at sea but only 3m wide when in port – so 6.50m wide and 6.50m long!) So we know the first boat will be a Proto. We do not know if the
plan is to build more Protos or one day even create a Series foiler. Boat no1 has a canting keel, of course, like all Protos, but beyond that… I did ask Christian a little more about the foils that Verdier has designed – no reply. ‘So what about the rudders, will you use elevators this time?’ No reply.
