Membrane roofing system installed at Leicester college

projects to increase capacity in the city is a £14m expansion of Fullhurst Community College, an over-subscribed secondary school for students aged 11-16. Delivered by Willmott Dixon, the scheme

L

involves modular construction of a new dedicated teaching building for years 7-8 and an infill extension to the courtyard of the existing main school building, along with refurbishment works and link structures to connect the new accommodation to the legacy building. Overall, the project will enable the

school to increase student numbers from 900 to 1,500 by 2019, while enhancing facilities and outdoor areas to maintain Fullhurst Community College’s reputation as one of the UK’s top 200 schools. Modular construction specialist, Ideal

Building Systems, was appointed to deliver the modular year 7-8 teaching block. The company builds bespoke modular units for the education sector and designed the build to meet Willmott Dixon’s requirements. The modular specialist’s preferred choice of roofing system, Firestone’s RubberGard™ EPDM waterproofing system for flat roofs, was retained in the specification. Explains Phil Burton from Ideal Building Systems: “We use the RubberGard™ EPDM

IKE many cities, Leicester faces the challenge of increasing demand for high school places and one of the key

membrane as standard on our modules because it is fast and easy to install, odour-free and requires no hot works. “While we were able to carry out 90%

of the roofing installation for the modules in our factory, there were some complex detailing requirements, including vents, roof lights, boiler flues and a parapet gutter along two sides of the building, some of which had to be carried out on site. There is virtually no roofing detail that cannot be achieved using Firestone RubberGard™ EPDM roofing system. All our operatives have been fully trained by Firestone and as we know we can rely on the company to provide excellent technical support, it simply made sense to use Firestone’s RubberGard™ EPDM rather than any other waterproofing system.” The two-storey modular building

comprises 72 modules and the RubberGard™ EPDM membrane was factory installed on half of these as part of the roof build up for the upper storey. Ideal Building Systems installed insulation directly into the metal deck of each module followed by OSB and then the Firestone RubberGard™ EPDM roofing system. Once the modules had been assembled on site, the installation team was able to joint them using Firestone’s QuickSeam™ SA Flashing, and complete the remaining detailing. When the roof

was completed, self-weighted solar PV panels were installed onto the building, to avoid any need for fixings. Roofing contractor, Classic Roofing

Maintenance, was appointed to install the roof for the traditional extension, which includes new classrooms, science labs, a music room, food technology facilities and a drama studio. The contractor installed a metal deck, followed by Firestone’s V- Force self adhesive vapour control layer and 120mm RESISTA AK PIR insulation board, which was fully adhered using Firestone ISO Twin Pack insulation adhesive.. The RubberGard™ EPDM membrane was then fully adhered to the Firestone RESISTA AK insulation. Oliver Beaumont from Classic Roofing

Maintenance adds: “This was a challenging installation with lots of different interfaces with the existing building, including the pitched roof, brick walls and windows. We have been using Firestone’s EPDM waterproofing systems for more than 15 years and we know that many systems simply couldn’t manage the level of complexity involved in a project like this but, with the system’s ease of use and the technical support available from Firestone, we were able to deliver the project on time.”
