NEWSTop Stories Sandwich strike suspended
Industrial action was suspended at Greencore, the high street sandwich
manufacturer, in September just as Landworker went to print.
Over 500 workers, many earning as little as £10.53 an hour, are demanding increased pay during the current cost of living crisis. Following a successful ballot, workers were due to take to the picket line in mid- September with strikes slated to last until October 9.
But a last-chance saloon offer from Greencore saw them suspend strike action as a good-will gesture as the new offer was put to Unite members.
Greencore is a major supplier of sandwiches and ready meals to big supermarkets like Morrisons, Asda, Aldi, Lidl and Co-Op as well as high street retailers like Boots. Their
planned industrial action would likely have sparked a shortage of sandwiches on the shelves for consumers.
Unite members perform a range of vital roles at Greencore including factory line workers, quality controllers, store workers and cleaners. Greencore’s last accounts show profits of over £15m.
Commenting on the suspended
action, Unite regional officer, Andy Shaw, said, “Greencore has finally come back to the negotiating table after the threat of strike action by our members. As a good-will gesture we have called off industrial action while we put this new offer to our members.”
Commenting when Unite first announced strike action at
Greencore, Unite general secretary, Sharon Graham said, “Greencore
workers do difficult work to ensure that sandwiches reach supermarket shelves across the country. Yet their employer, whilst making substantial profits, sees fit not to share the spoils with its workers.”
“Our members will have the unceasing support of Unite in their fight for improved pay.”

When the Katrin sisters aka Dave and Istvan Imre were unable to perform at Tolpuddle this year some helpful Unite friends managed to organise this special gig at the Weymouth LGBTQI+ venue.
After a barnstorming show, Romanians Diana and Aida paid tribute to fellow international IUF sisters, Sue and Bev.
